The numbers are in and look a little worse than first forecast.

China had 850,000 fewer people by the end of 2022 vs 2021

China's population is expected to plummet going forward as birth rates remain very low and the population ages.

Even tho China ended it's 1 child per couple policy in 2016, couples have chosen to remain having few or no children

I've been looking for this gif/video for years. :laughga:

OT: I didn't know the one child policy was ongoing until 2016?! I must be living in a rock.

Yay for human decline, I firmly believe there's 1-2 billion of us more than there should be.

Boo for potential less hot Chinese men in the future :triggered: but oh well

I don't think there's a real specific number earth can sustain. Depends how much we consume and how

Also 1 billion people in Europe/North America has more impact that 1 Billion ppl in China or definitely Africa

So it really depends

Just bc we may not be able to sustain everyone, doesn’t mean not all of us deserve to exist… :messga:

Isn't this good news? China is overpopulated. Almost 1/4th of all humans live there. As long as the reason for its decline of population isn't something inhumane and is coming naturally, this is a win.

The beginning of the end (sadly, but I do believe this ). China's demographic collapse is going to be massive and destabile the whole country and like Russia it will start a war (over Taiwan), which effectively start WW3.

China’s birth rate is actually now lower than Japan’s. They'll soon face a massive demographic time bomb with a large aging population.

East Asia in general is currently in a rapid decline of population because of low birth rates. South Korea being the lowest (0.8 :rip:

I mean it's kind of good in a way but the drop is also very rapid. There's probably gonna be major reprocutions their economy that will spill over else where

Also China may be super populated but their population on a per capita basis is not one of the world's biggest ecological foot printer

The US with 1/4 their population by many measures consumes just as much as China

😭😭😭 sometimes I skim-read… but did I lie? :hor:

OT: Maybe the issue isn’t just too many people on earth, but our systems not properly adjusting to it

kinda keep bringing this up cuz I strongly believe the argument of too much population is very oversimplified and maybe not as straight forward as it appears to most ppl

The total number of ppl alone doesn't tell u the ecological impact. Some parts of the world consume WAY more than others. 100M ppl in Europe and North America will consume more than 1 Billion in Africa....

If we cut down earth's population by half and got rid of only the poorest 50% earth would still be in trouble. But getting rid of the 1 Billion highest consuming ones might actually do more

As far as population number changes, The poorest Countries that consume the least also happen to be the ones with the fastest population growth rates. Africa is literally the fastest growing continent now

And it also depends how and what we consume on. And what green techs we shift to as well

I don't think we can really put a plain number on how many ppl is too much and how much consumption is too much. There's so many variables
