Morphine Prince 109,655
BEIJING (AP) — China on Saturday reported nearly 60,000 deaths in people who had COVID-19 since early December, offering hard numbers for an unprecedented surge that was apparent in overcrowded hospitals and packed crematoriums, even as the government released little data about the status of the pandemic for weeks. Those numbers may still underestimate the toll, though the government said the “emergency peak" of its latest surge appears to have passed. The toll included 5,503 deaths due to respiratory failure caused by COVID-19 and 54,435 fatalities from other ailments combined with COVID-19 since Dec. 8, the National Health Commission announced. It said those “deaths related to COVID” occurred in hospitals, which means anyone who died at home would not be included in the numbers. The report would more than double China’s official COVID-19 death toll to 10,775 since the disease was first detected in the central city of Wuhan in late 2019. China has counted only deaths from pneumonia or respiratory failure in its official COVID-19 death toll, a narrow definition that excludes many deaths that would be attributed to COVID-19 in much of the world. China stopped reporting data on COVID-19 deaths and infections after abruptly lifting anti-virus controls in early December despite a surge in infections that began in October and has filled hospitals with feverish, wheezing patients. Hospitals in Beijing across the country have been overwhelmed with patients, and funeral homes and crematoriums have struggled to handle the dead. Stef666 4,604
This is scary. The thought of the world reliving this hell once again with potentially even worse outcomes is very discouraging. I just want this to be over already...

Guest
China's population is 1.5 billion and they have been under "zero covid" measures till a few days ago. I think that was to be expected and nothing to make a drama about

Dennis 8,391
if they reported 60k, with the Chinese government lies, the real number is probably higher. This is really so sad. I wish they were open to trying different vaccines from other countries? We really need to help them otherwise the virus will mutate and make a comeback. It’s quite silly how people are acting like Covid is some thing of the past and going around like they’re immune to Covid and getting it won’t have ramifications on their health. Covid is why so many people are getting sick with other viruses and getting such severe cases of flu and other respiratory illness. Covid suppresses the immune system for months after infection making a person vulnerable to illness.
Knife 7,079
China has almost militant quarantining practices and they still can't curb it? Their vaccines must be really bad.. I feel like it should be standard practice at this point to start masking up around this time of year and be sensible about your interactions if you can. From around Thanksgiving to New Years, we've had over 100+ staff call out at my company from flu/covid. Last year, it was slightly higher, but similar amounts of cases. The virus mutated so the vaccines don't work efficiently anymore. We shouldn't have stopped wearing masks ever. It was well known that the pandemic wouldn't end soon but everyone acts like it isn't a problem anymore. Drop it

China don't have a working vaccine to begin with. And their gov don't allow Western vaccines to be administered. Now that the country opened, many of its citizens finally able to go to Hong Kong to get said mRNA vaccines (Pfizer & Moderna) (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ✧*:・゚ ᶠʳᵒⁿᵗ ᵗᵒʷᵃʳᵈ ᵉⁿᵉᵐʸ (*´艸`*) ♡♡♡

The Chinese population has basically zero immunity because their government is completely incompetent and deliberately violent and oppressive. China is unique in this case, most of the rest of the world has high levels of population immunity now. Even if people do catch covid multiple times (which, many do), it is much less severe than what the Chinese population will be dealing with.
