Call me Joanne

What does Gaga mean when she says “Call Me Joanne”….or “I am Joanne”. I understand the importance of Joanne to her and how it affected her family. But I’m watching Gaga Five Foot two and she’s telling this guy the story of Joanne, then ends it with “I am Joanne, I am my fathers daughter”. What exactly does she mean?

In 2011 she said she half jokingly but half seriously believes that Joanne's spirit lives through her. I'm not sure why she never said this during the Joanne era (to my knowledge). Maybe because it's TOO personal, and some people might not understand. Or she wanted it to be more general and relatable so she didn't get into specifics.

Found it, video is timestamped

It's pretty much about the impact Joanne's passing had on her Dad and how that intertwined almost into Gaga's personal self.

There's so many layers to this honestly, but I think that's another story - Gaga's Dad who still goes through that event every day.

This - she definitely means that she is essentially her family and her family’s trauma by saying she’s Joanne.

it just so happens that with the aesthetic and her kookiness that it comes across as a little bizarre lol

Yeah i remember when I saw the Joanne tour in Atlanta and she kept saying that into the mic .. she seemed really intent on that during that whole era

I feel like she also said this because she wanted to be a character / alter ego for that album cycle

it could have been a type of method acting for her to get into the character of Joanne that she had created based off what she's been told through family stories and stuff

i've always believed that the album can be seen from the perspective of Joanne herself, not as an accurate autobiography but as a diary of a young woman type thing which gaga fuses with her own experiences

mother, what must i do?

This!

More fans need to understand this because the "dead aunt" jokes are so disrespectful.

She's pointing out the fact that she is literally Joanne, but I think she is also pointing out an implication of that fact, beyond the literal.

Her being named Joanne was obviously her father's idea, he was projecting to some extent. He would have hoped to see some of his late sister in his daughter, and his daughter would surely have absorbed that.
