The lipizzan horse breed recognized by UNESCO

The Lipizzan breed is one of the oldest horse breeds in Europe. As of 2022, the "tradition of raising Lipizzan horses " was included on the UNESCO heritage list. At the moment, at the Sambata de Jos stud, there are over 300 horses of the pure Lipitan breed, that is, the most important nucleus for this breed, including a line formed in Transylvania and recognized at the international level.

How many horses of the Lipizzan breed exist in Europe today?

There is only one stud in each country, except Romania, which has two. But there are also many private breeders, so an exact number of horses is not known. And although the International Federation of Lipitans tries to keep under control and affiliate all private breeders in the world, it is very difficult, because some simply do not affiliate. has the largest herd - around 300-400 horses. 

What is the special element about this breed?

They are not very picky horses from the point of view of food, precisely because they have adapted very well to their living environment. They can be used for equestrian sports, for riding, but also for specific competitions, in which their qualities (genetic characteristics, appearance, way of care) are appreciated. 

Why is it important that this tradition be maintained?

Apart from the scientific motivations already mentioned, which are important to be able to move forward the world we live in, I think it is also an emotional matter. Intangible cultural heritage is actually about emotion.

Gaga's horse was Arabian breed and the lipizzan is actually an offshot of Arabian!
