Bob Dylan criticizes musicians as lowering the standard of music

Bob Dylan has gone to great lengths to share his less-than-enthusiastic thoughts on the current music scene – stating that streaming has made it “too easy” for artists: “streaming has made music too smooth and painless. Just one stroke of the ring finger, middle finger, one little click, that’s all it takes … It’s all too easy, too democratic.”

He proceeded to blast technology as a whole, labelling it as “sorcery”, before directly criticising musicians from all genres as lowering the standard of music:
"Who is going to write standards today?” he asked, before listing witheringly: “A rap artist? A hip-hop or rock star? A raver, a sampling artist, a pop singer?”
He continued: “That’s music for the establishment. It’s easy listening. It just parodies real life, goes through the motions, puts on an act. A standard is on another level. It’s a role model for other songs, one in a thousand.”

“It’s a computer model. […] You need a solar X-ray detector just to find somebody’s heart, see if they still have one.”

Although the majority of the discussion became somewhat of a trivial jab at the changing times, the musician did ultimately share his fondness for some modern artists who remind him of himself.

“The Oasis Brothers, I like them both [and] I’ve seen Metallica twice. I’ve made special efforts to see Jack White and Alex Turner [@Cello]” he recalled.
“I’m a fan of Royal Blood, Celeste, Rag and Bone Man, Wu-Tang, Eminem, Nick Cave, Leonard Cohen… anybody with a feeling for words and language, anybody whose vision parallels mine.”

I mean he’s allowed to have his opinions but music is about human expression, which is limitless. So what if he feels it to be insignificant. He can’t police people’s self expression and he certainly can’t stop people from enjoying what they enjoy. I also find it ironic how some of todays artists love to hype of standards (which I love myself)… even Gaga said last year that nobody writes music like Cole Porter anymore. Like Gaga, no one is stopping you from doing that

I can get into the argument that a lot of modern music is lacking depth, but the way all of this is worded seems beyond bitter.

Music is art, and art is exactly that, it is limitless. It can be "super basic" and it can be "super unique", it is up to the artist!!

And I prefer musicians whose work is great for the musical aspect first and foremost, I respect that he's a good lyricist but his music does nothing for me.
