Joanna Lumley has hit out at women who call everything sexist, saying it is a “new fashion” to be a victim.

The actress said women were tougher when she was a younger and that they knew how to deal with the attention.

"The new fashion is to be a victim, a victim of something. It’s pathetic. We have gone mad."

In an interview with Prospect Magazine, the Absolutely Fabulous star was asked how she felt about the MeToo movement: "If someone whistled at you in the street, it didn’t matter.

"If someone was groping, we slapped their hands. We were quite tough and looked after ourselves."

Or maybe people are tired of it being normalized to be treated unfairly, and are taking a stand. I'm tired of people from older generations and/or more close-minded beliefs trying to minimize peoples feelings by saying "deal with it". No. When people get treated unfairly, they now stand up for themselves and call it out so everyone knows that we don't tolerate bad behavior anymore. I'm proud of the fact that newer generations are adopting this idea.

I know this is a tough concept for some, but people are a product of their time and what she said accurately reflects the world she grew up in and had to deal with head on. She's not wrong, but she's also not realizing that people have different expectations and demands now.

But it's also kind of a full circle moment - people have the space to demand better standards of treatment and decency BECAUSE people like Joanna Lumley succeeded.

100% People forget that even if it was 10 years ago, 20 years ago, that's a pretty quick time in which a lot of changes happen for the better. In her time, women probably had to just toughen themselves up to live every day.

"women were tougher" , maybe that represented her way of fighting through and becoming so successful but it is a fact that today female representation in top positions that were unconceivable for women back then exists nowadays. Our way of listening and taking more perspectives into consideration in deciding who gets the job, especially female visions, led us to make room for women who maybe would not had the chance back then to "slap back"

Bottling up emotion and keeping quiet about SA isn't a sign of strength. If anything woman have only gotten tougher by speaking out.
