Essay: The Importance of „The Cure“ on Gagas Career

Hey Monsters,

earlier today was the first time in a long while that I listened to „The Cure“ by Gaga. It‘s been almost six years since that Song came out and today I reminisced, thought about what the Song meant to Gagas career and the way the it changed her Pop Music.

„The Cure“ is a standalone Single, released by Gaga on Apr. 16th 2017 and debuted first on the livestreamed Coachella Festival, Gaga headlined. The Song is one of Gagas Top 10 most streamed Hits ever on Spotify and Apple Music, went into the Top 30 in various countries, sold over 2M copies Worldwide and was performed at the AMAs and the Joanne World Tour.

Before „The Cure“ was released, Gaga had just put out „Joanne“ half-a-year earlier. The Folk-Country infused Pop Record received great critical reception and a drastic image change for Gaga. The pink cowboy hat, short denim pants and a crop top were the aesthetic that carried this Era. It was during that time that Gaga also booked the role for ‚A Star is Born‘, yet another huge milestone in her career. So - where does „The Cure“ fit into that? After „Joanne“ was released, we learnt through leaked legal Documents, that Gaga already began working on LG6 with DJWS. The follow-up record included Sessions with Diane Warren („Why Did You Do That“) or Julia Michaels and Justin Tranter („Heal Me“). Gaga was bound to return to Pop Music. However, the more clear the concept of „A Star Is Born“ became, the Songs eventually were used for that and the ‚original‘ LG6 as we could‘ve known it, ended up being the Soundtrack - except for „The Cure“.

It was in the year of 2017 that Gagas contract with Interscope had negotiations. Her old contract stated that she didn‘t make a dime off of streaming. This changed with the new one. After „Joanne“ failed to grab the young Audience, Gaga knew that the Coachella festival, filled with the demographic she wasn‘t able to reach, was the perfect opportunity to reintroduce herself as a Pop-Diva with a new Hit-Song. The Song ended up charting fairly well, for no promotion. It also was her first Streaming Hit and is still one of her most streamed Songs.

tl;dr: „The Cure“ was a way for Gaga to meet the demand of a new Pop-Song while also introducing herself to the audience that just got into her thanks to the Superbowl. While it may have not been a chart-topping multi-Platinum Hit, it did what it had to do, in a time where Gaga and her Team were just waiting for „A Star is Born“ to come out.

I sometimes wonder that, if „A Star is Born“ had never happened… would‘ve „The Cure“ been a promotional-/lead-Single for LG6; or was „The Cure“ only released because Gaga knew it would never make any other Album? How far along into the process of LG6 was Gaga at that time?

I personally don’t believe the song would exist if it wasn’t for ASIB. I think it was just a reject from the sessions, as it’s really similar to Heal Me and Hair Body Face and has the same producer. I just think she saw more potential for the song than the film would have given it, and connected it to a personal message so that it felt more natural to release it. And like you said, it bridged a gap between Joanne and the soundtrack.

It also seemed like a cool surprise Thank You to the fans, since Coachella and JWT felt super celebratory of her career aaand that small orange-curly haired Era and the live Performances it gave us! I think she knew the Film would never give it the same justice.

I also think that The Cure might have something to do with the fact that Gaga's friend Sonja was very ill at the time the song was written, performed and released (I believe it was like a month before her passing.)

One way or another, it’s one of the most underrated songs in her catalog. It’s ear candy to me and it was SO fun at JWT.

Remains a great song. One of her most radio friendly songs. It's just a nice, easy melody, with inspiring lyrics and ear worm-y production.

Agree with your assertions.
