Romanian President Klaus Iohannis said that negotiations are being carried out until the last moment. But the dignitaries from Vienna maintain their decision: they do not agree with the accession of Romania and Bulgaria. "More time is needed," says the Austrian chancellor. He blames the fact that many migrants who arrive in Austria have illegally crossed the border from us, but political sources claim that there could also be economic interests in the middle.

The Austrians invoke the vulnerabilities of the southeastern borders of Europe on routes that pass through Romania and Bulgaria. Politicians from Bucharest came up with official reports showing that only 2.7% of the migrants who arrived in Western Europe transited through our country. Marceal Ciolacu, president of the Chamber of Deputies: "The vote is a political one."

Just three days after Austria's interior minister announced that he would vote against Romania, a delegation from the OMV Petrom company, led by the president of the Supervisory Board, Alfred Stern, visited the Cotroceni Palace. In a press release sent after the discussions, the presidential administration said that OMV will announce the final investment decision for the Black Sea gas exploitation in the middle of next year.

Political sources claim that the representatives of OMV Petrom would also like to amend the offshore law so that the state maintains the royalties for the gas they will exploit at the current level and renounces the right of preemption. This would mean that the representatives of the Austrian company will not have to first offer the Romanian state for the exploited gas. One day after the visit from Cotroceni, the Chancellor of Austria, Karl Nehammer, declared that he would not support Romania's accession to Schengen.

The official excuse was that immigrant routes transit Romania. This has been proven false as Croatia - country which Austria will allow to join- is to a much greater extend a immigrant hub. Only 0,2% of the illegal immigrants that make it to EU come through Romania (https://frontex.europa.eu/we-know/migratory-map/).

Stats by frontex.europa show only 5.700 illegal immigrants came to EU from Eastern Europe while the Western Balkans route accounted for 139.525 illegal migrants. 4.000 illegal crossings were atempted at the Romania-Hungary border from January to August (source). The excuse used by Austria simply cannot hold water, and it seems that we found the likely reason for its blackmail.

Romania is in the EU as Austria and EU law applies to both countries. Being outside Schengen or inside doesn’t mean there is different regulations or laws in place so this theory about OMV and potential exploitation of romanian gas from side of Austria and that being the reason for not giving a positive vote on joining Schengen is ridiculous.

Have you read the article? They are saying OMW (which visited the Presidential Palace 3 days before Austria announced it wants to oppose Romania's entry) wants Romania's to modify its offshore gas low so they will exploit it and then distribuite it wherever they want, meaning Austria wants Romania to not have a preferantial position when it comes to the gas on its own territory. It's a tool of blackmail as Austria seems to use its veto to gain something. You keep saying it's because of illegal immigrants which is factually wrong and I posted various sources proving it, but you still seem to resist it for some reason.

I have read the article and you need to calm a little. I repeat, laws and regulations Are the same If you Are an EU member no matter If in Schengen or not. This theory about OMV and gas and pipeline deals sound Like just an excuse for failed Foreign policy and bad diplomacy from Romanian side.

Ok but... you do realize that Romania modifying their gas law is a necessity anyway because it is against EU laws.

They are not allowed to put their national interests above EU law anyway, they have to treat every other EU citzizen and corporate with its seat in the EU the same as a Romanian citizen. For the same reason Germany is FORCED to export renewable energies into France and import fossils and nuclear from France. :chica:

EU is still not a federation. European law is supreme over national legislation but in relative terms and is limited by national constitutional law. So Romania can make a good case that right of preemption is compabile with EU law. You can correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't Cyprus have a right of preemption regarding its newly discovered gas reservers too (I tried googling it, but with no results).

The laws and regulations have been met since 2011. The failed foreign policy and bad diplomacy comes from countries like Austria which are still using excuses and pretexts to deny the implementation of what EU institutions already decided, which is that Bulgaria and Romania should become members of Schengen Area as they are obligated do. The immigrant stuff has been debunked already, as I said, 139.525 illegal migrants came to EU from Serbia and Croatia from January to November while 4.000 came from Romania from January to August the same year. I am interested to hear what other violations of the criteria of joining EU Romania would be responsible for and/or irregularities which EU has been glancing over when it gave Rom the greenlight.

You Are constantly mentioning Croatia and bigger Numbers of illegal immigration from their Border but Croatia also implemented all requirements and is in accordance to acqui. Croatia borders Hungary and Slovenia which Are in Schengen and Southern and eastern borders with Western Balkan countries. All those immigrants Had to pass Bulgaria or Romania to come to Croatia. Croatia is not a country that is exposed  to eastern regions of Europe or Turkey.

All immigrants comming to Croatia Had to pass at least one EU country before ( Greece being in Schengen ).

That is why Croatia and its position is different from Romania or Bulgaria. And Numbers you Are mentioning regarding Croatia Are Way over the official estimates and official Numbers from Croatia and Slovenian or Hungarian Border controls.

How is Schengen related to gas?

Austria cut ties with Russia a while ago regarding their gas, hence why Romania is even more of an option now because OMV is based in both countries. It‘s not to exploit anything, it‘s simply to secure gas for the future & to cooperate. (But yes it‘s correct that it will be sold on a trading market but that’s just how it works)

These people are not going Turkey -> Bulgaria -> Romania -> Serbia -> Bosnia-Herzegovina -> Croatia -> Hungary when they can skip Romania all together. If they indeed skip Romania (which they don't), that is a further argument that Romania is fit for Schengen. I also asked you to point me factually to rules and regulations of Schengen which are not being met as the immigrant issue doesn't cut it.

Croatia is on the end of the immigrant hub of the Western Balkans, proving Austria has ulterior interests when it allows it but not other states. Those numbers are official European estimates btw, I suggest you would link me with some factual sources that say immigrants that make it to Austria come from Romania because if you believe it, you must either have a backing for it or you are believing/ arguing something unfounded.

Small correction: OMV is not solely based in the two countries, OMV is an Austrian company which naturally seeks Austrian interests the same way the Romanian government is Romanian-centric and seeks Romanian interests.

You ask how is Schengen relates to gas and answer the question in the second paragraph: Austria has an already existing contractual agreement, but now seized the opportunity to negociate more concessions. Like Turkey seizing the opportunity to get concessions from Sweden and Finland. Pragmatic interests and struggle for resources are always at play and nation weaponise the means they have, it's the same story everywhere.

Croatia is not a immigrant hub as there Are no camps or big facilities hosting big Numbers of illegal immigrants on Croatian soil. Bosnia and Serbia have them but Croatia doesn’t .

And how do these people in Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina make it to Austria considering Romania-Hungary border is most often than not not frequented?

You do not need to post pictures. I know Locations of each country we Are talking about here.
You wrote Many claims I think Are not completly true and there is a reason why Romania and Bulgaria Are voted and Croatia is not.

And it is not just Because Austrians love beaches in Croatia.

Austrian Chancellor Nehammer was in Zagreb few weeks ago and he stated that smallest number of illegal immigrants in Austria came from Croatia.

It is Austrian Data If you think Croatian ones Are not correct.

Why would Austrian chancellor Lie about Numbers regarding Croatia? What can he gain from it?

Just accept the fact that there is a reason and that reason can be in number of illegal Border crossings in Romania and Bulgaria, it can also regard crime and cross Border criminal activity . All that is taken into account.
