Coin proves fake Roman emperor was actually real

An ancient gold coin proves that a third century Roman emperor written out of history as a fictional character really did exist, scientists say. The coin bearing the name of Sponsian and his portrait was found more than 300 years ago in Romania. Believed to be a fake, it had been locked away in a museum cupboard.

Now scientists say scratch marks visible under a microscope prove that it was in circulation 2,000 years ago.

Prof Paul Pearson University College London, who led the research, told BBC News that he was astonished by the discovery. He saw photographs of the coin while researching for a book about the history of the Roman empire. He could make out scratches on its surface that he thought might have been produced by the coin being in circulation.

He contacted the Hunterian Museum at Glasgow University where the coin had been kept locked away in a cupboard along with three others from the original hoard, and asked if he could work with the researchers there. They examined all four coins under a powerful microscope and confirmed in the journal, PLOS 1, that there really were scratches, and the patterns were consistent with them being jingled around in purses.

A chemical analysis also showed that the coins had been buried in soil for hundreds of years, according to Jesper Ericsson, who is the museum's curator of coins and worked with Prof Pearson on the project.

So basically he was a a Roman emperor based in Dacia in 260s AD who didn't know who the real emperor in Rome was because of the civil war. This kind of re-writes the Ancient history of Romania:

While it has problems of misinformation like all media,TikTok has actually proven to be a goldmine of valuable and accurate information on everything from inside looks at protests in Iran and China, to apprehending criminals, racists, bigots, etc, and for bringing people lost back to each other just to name a few. It’s fun to call it a stupid kids app, but it really is way more than that.

we have lots of fake coins in our time. I worked in retail back when Obama was president and people would bring in fake coins with Obama on one side and Oprah on the other. They looked sooo real and like quarters that if you didn’t look, it wouldn’t have been something you noticed.

Are you asking if it's possible the coin was a fake in its time that was put into circulation and practically used as a real coin despite its inauthenticity?  Well, this is a bit of what happened. The coin was put into circulation in a breakway region in South-Eastern Europe without the knowledge of the capital of Rome, so in a sense it was 'ilegitimate' (we are talking about a rump state of the Roman Empire based in the province of Dacia). However, for all intents and purposes it was still real for the ones who used it. Back in those times, if you had the materials and means to create a coin, then it means you were rich and in a position of power, it was not like in our age when everybody can make cheap replicas of coins and try to pas them as real.
