NASA releases pictures showing Ukrainian blackout

UPDATE: After certain people starting spreading conspiracy theories about how supposedly the media is "filtering" the image to make the blackout more dramatic, here's a direct link to the NASA website showing the exact same map:

https://worldview.earthdata.nasa.gov/?v=-4.238502814835112,35.59231399711549,56.57079213854256,62.381177386066874&l=Reference_Labels_15m(hidden),Reference_Features_15m(hidden),Coastlines_15m,VIIRS_SNPP_DayNightBand_At_Sensor_Radiance,VIIRS_SNPP_DayNightBand_AtSensor_M15(hidden),VIIRS_SNPP_CorrectedReflectance_TrueColor(hidden)&lg=true&t=2022-11-24-T12%3A00%3A00Z

-----------------------------

NASA released before and after pictures to show the effects of the Ukrainian blackout and how it plunged almost all of Ukraine into darkness (they're still without power).

This comes as Germany offered to send Patriot air defense systems to Poland, but Poland asked for the systems to be given to Ukraine instead. Germany and NATO refused such request.

I think we've sadly reached the point where the world is simply desensitized to the massive scale of war crimes that are happening in Ukraine. Nothing short of nuclear strikes will make anyone care at this point.

The pictures are not entirely acurrate. They have a filter over Russia and Romania (which is shown as darker too for no reason). Plus a glitch making Snake Island brighter than it should remotely be. So yeah, the images are exagerrated and this should be made clear when sharing the pictures.

I am not.. pointing out flaws or inaccuracies in a certain direction feels more and more like walking on eggshels and it is concerning.

I have no clue what's the point of this post?

These pictures are released by NASA and shared by CNN, ABC and many other reliable outlets.

Please if you have nothing to say, it's better to say nothing than to spread conspiracy theories about "filter" and "altering" being done by NASA and these networks. While satellite imagery is not 100% perfect. It still shows the overall effect of the blackout.

Here's another one from CNN in case you couldn't see it clearly enough:

The point of this post is to say the pictures are edited baby boy. There is a filter added on top of Russia and Romania and Snake Island is sudenly as bright as a metropolis. No ''but-but'', the picture is tweaked and this is the reality. The picture is still obviously accurate for the most part, but not entirely and denying it makes no sense other that prove you believe everything you see without checking the details.

And your source for claiming that CNN and NASA are editing the pictures lol?

"trust me  I know better than everyone"?

Snake Island was taken back by Ukraine and it's being used to protect the grain shipments. It's likely to have electricity hence you see the light heat there. This is a greyscale mode map. It means when there's light = white spots, when there's no light = dark grey/black.

Sorry, but not gonna entertain this delusion. You can miss me with these conspiracy theories.

This is you basically acting all patronizing claiming you know what is goig on in the Middle East, Iran and Eastern Europe even though you don't live here and you get your news from biased sources. You are right when they are right and wrong when they are wrong.

Tell me, how much electrity is used on Snake Island that makes it brigher than almost everything in the Republic of Moldova? What population and dimensions does Snake Island have? Why is Romania darker in the after photo, are there blackouts here? Why are Russia and Romania clearly blured? If you don't adress these question don't bother replying.

And how does square in with what is presented? Why is more dark grey/black in Romania and Russia than before, are there blackouts here or the photo might have been taken at a diferent hours from more dramatic effect? The pictures are visibily either cherrypicked or edited to look different and there is no need for that.

I'm not going to waste time on this.

I've provided you with sources, and an even clearer picture provided by NASA. If you can't zoom in and see that no Snake Island is not brighter than Chisinau and Budapest, then I can't help you. Best to use of the ignore feature at this point. If your first reaction to this is to baselessly claim that "NASA is biased source and editing their pictures to help Ukraine" I'm really not interested in unfounded conspiracy theories especially when it comes to wars with disastrous effects for millions of people. Have a good day.

Are you unable to read? I was talking about the clearer pictures I provided you with here it is again, nearly all of europe are in it, including Romania, Hungary, Poland etc.. What the heck are you talking about, saying that it's not on the map? Do I need to highlight Moldova, Romania and Hungary on the map or you got it?

The before and after pictures are still disingenous because they compare Ukraine when it was most full of light with the time it looked worst, because of cloud coverage and/or at a different hours in order to make a more dramatic point

Debithius

Why does the picture with Ukraine in full blackout look blurry alongside Russia's southern border? It looks like a filter, it is as if countries around Ukraine decided to turn off their lights for no reason? Not saying that they aren't facing a blackout but...I am not sure these pictures are fully accurate.

Here we go again. I'll take your argument in good faith, and try to explain in good faith.

Those blurs are because satellite images don't capture the entire earth surface in one shot, so what you basically see are seperate segments layered together to make up the world map that we see. And as a result you may see some blurr and rough edges alongside the borders of those segments. Sometimes you can even see a clear line of difference (like east of sardinia). And if a segment's resolution is lower than the others neighboring it, you'll see a distinguishable blur.

For example notice that there is also a heavier blur in the Venice area in italy. It doesn't mean that the picture is "filtered" to make Ukraine blackout more dramatic.

These are pictures provided by NASA and shared by many reliable news outlets. So really, let's be careful before make such insinuations. The real story here should be the  fact that over ten million ukrainians are without power. Let's not distract from that with these petty arguments about why the picture isn't pixel perfect. It's a satellite shot.
