The Grammy's are trying to redeem themselves as they totally snubbed ABBA during their heyday. It's not exactly as comparable but think of Bowie's sweep in 2017. Plus the boomers on the panel are probably hardcore ABBA stans so nothing is certain Hmm idk if boomers were the lead then Gaga and Tony would've won last year instead of Doja Cat and SZA but who knows, anything can happen after Joanne lol. StrawberryBlond 14,820
Really surprised at these nominations. For the most part, they seem to be very commercially focused, which is unusual for the Grammys. ROTY and SOTY in particular isn't as random as usual and features a lot more hits than usual. The inclusion of abcdefu is clearly the biggest controversy, particularly as it was nominated for literally nothing else which is very strange. It's weird when a song is up for a massive general field category but isn't nominated in its respective genre category. If it was good enough to be in the highly competitive general field (which combines all genres), why isn't it good enough by its respective genre's standards? And even stranger, Gayle wasn't nominated for new artist and considering there's 10 spaces available and a good portion of them have been releasing music for a few years prior, it seems a bit unfair that she got locked out of the most obvious category she could've been nominated in. They should really rename that award "best breakthrough artist" because that would be a much more apt description. I'm also wondering why so many voters have supported Mary J. Blige's new album when it was completely under the radar and none of its singles even charted. Yes, it got a 75 on MC, there are albums rated higher that never got noticed. She's had a lot of nominations and awards over the years but voters only ever massively supported one of her albums before and that was back in 2007. I don't know where this sudden focus has come from to grant her 6 nominations. Naturally, when so many voters are involved, you will end up with some lesser successful works nominated but they tend to have just 1 or 2 nominations if that's the case but to have so many on the same page to grant one artist 6 nominations is rare and makes you wonder how much of it is discussed and corroborated beforehand. And that traditional pop album list was one of the most random I've ever seen (to be fair, so was last year's). I think there was a major struggle to find anyone to get nominated so they scrabbled around for something. Those Christmas album were released in October 2021 for a ceremony held in February 2023! This is why Gaga could do worse than to keep releasing jazz standards albums - they seem to be an easy win for her as she's usually the most currently successful name nominated so voters just gravitate towards her. I just wish we had a reasoning behind all the decisions made because it gets to the point where you just don't know what the academy wants from artists. Do they want super commercial and safe or low-key and experimental? And why do they only want these things from certain artists? Why do they suddenly want to support artists out the blue that they never overly supported before? How invested are they in the choices they make and do they just have to pad out categories sometimes?

She’s been making bops since AT LEAST 2017 This Category recognizes an artist whose eligibility-year release(s) achieved a breakthrough into the public consciousness and notably impacted the musical landscape. in 2020 they removed rule about the maximum 30 tracks/singles a new artist could have released. Not eligible are only artists with a previous Grammy nomination as a performer. "You b*tch!" ~ Rat Boy
