Honestly I don’t think even Gaga wants to win this time. She’d be happy with a nomination and a chance to perform. Having said that, HMH is definitely more up the conservative voters alley so that will help it a lot. Top Gun is like catnip for old American people which is like 90% of the academy.

I think Tom would love an Oscar for Top Gun. Idk, maybe the movie has a real chance in some technical category besides that?

I think it might depend on how much of a hit Black Panther is. If it's a huge deal culturally I could see the song getting the award. I might be appreciated more in the context of the movie.

Also, slightly OT but can you imagine when Gaga is nominated in this category for her Joker/Harley duet :excited2:

I was under the impression that it could win Best Picture :oprah: I didn't see the movie but I know there was a lot of hype around it.

They aren’t eligible since the song contains a sample

It was submitted by Paramount.

This is Rihanna's first new music in years and the song is a tribute to Chadwick Boseman.  Plus, Wakanda Forever will probably be a lot more prominent during Oscar season than Top Gun: Maverick.  All the Odds are stacked in Rihanna's favor, except for the fact that (in my personal opinion) "Lift Me Up" is not actually that great of a song.  It's between Gaga and Rihanna at this point, even if Taylor campaigns the hell out of "Carolina" (and honestly I think she will put more focus on campaigning her Oscar-eligible short film All Too Well).

It's still too early, but Goldderby says The Fabelmans (Steven Spielberg) is the frontrunner in several categories, including Best Picture. Top Gun has a good chance for a Best Picture nomination, but it's more likely to win in Cinematography and Editing.

Best sound is on lock at this point and maybe best editing too. It’s definitely going to win a few categories.

Lift Me Up is not just "not great", it's awful and it's not just your opinion it's everyone's opinion.

This is coming from someone who has been a hardcore Rihanna stan.

Also, Wakanda Forever is not getting unanimous praise like Top Gun Maverick. It’s 94% on RT and 71 on Metacritic right now but the consensus seems to be that the first movie was better.

Obviously you only have to beat what's in front of you, but I would be amazed if Top Gun wins best picture. Yes the aerial scenes are spectacular, but plot and script are woeful. They barely even pretended that they were trying.
