Canada's Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister came under fire after talking about her own family budgeting and how her family decided to cut Disney+ to save $13 a month as her older kids weren't whatching it that much anymore and "every bit helps"

On social media they found it insulting for her to insinuate struggles that compare to typical struggling Canadians Amid high inflation and wages that haven't fully kept up

Chrystia Freeland then reworded her remarks and acknowledged she's in a position of Priveledge with significant salary and that she does not struggle like a typical family

Appreciative for the amendment. It’s great on paper for a finance minister to be relatable, but her salary is just not relatable (most govt jobs aren’t). One could fix that w bargaining w this boss but apparently that’s immoral to Doug Ford 🙄☠️

Which is fine. I don't think her comment was as bad was what ppl were making it out to be

It's not like she was asking for sympathy or complaining. Yeah she gave a comment about budgeting and obviously she doesnt have to budget as hard as a typical family... But it's not like she said she did. Maybe better she hadn't said it but like it really wasn't that serious

I think ppl read way too much into tbh. The toxicity of cancel culture where every tiny mistake has to be a big deal

This is why she would be a terrible PM candidate for the LPC. She's a brilliant scholar and a very competent minister but she just doesn't have what it takes to connect with voters.

And I say this as someone that wants to see a weak LPC so that the NDP can continue to hold the balance of power and maybe even gain enough leverage to force a referendum on electoral reform or at least a citizens' assembly. Just not weak enough to hand a majority to the Cons.

For her own sake and for our collective fate, I hope she gets the NATO job.

I'm not really bothered that she may not resonate in those ways. Most politicians don't anyway

Ultimately policy and competence to me matters most

It doesn't bother you because you're politically literate and well informed. Most voters aren't. She will be murdered by headlines and soundbites.

On the policy front, she lost me long ago with her apathy towards the housing crisis. The Libs will always put boomers/NIMBYs first and she's provided no indication that she'll be any different.

I agree they aren't doing enough about the housing crisis

But I also think that blame goes far beyond her and her Government

Housing in many ways is more influenced by Municipal and Provincial governments than it is by federal government's

The Federal Government can try to increase stuff like subsidized housing or grow on federal assisted building construction programs or make moves like trying to tax and limit foreign buyers  etc

but ultimately that only does so much, when it comes to big things like zoning laws, density, permits and general housing planning the municipal and provincial governments are far more involved than the federal government

U can only blame them so much for an issue where they aren't the primary jurisdiction that manages that

edit: I also can't stand nymbis either. They are such a problem and big factor why densification that would help with cheaper supply is such a slow process

The only ones complaining are the anti liberals who constantly complain about everything said by Chrystia or any of the Liberals. And her comment was basically about considering cutting streaming services your signed up to as a way to save money.

Oh please. You think someone like Pierre Poilievre is a competent candidate for prime minister? He is a joke who does nothing but waste time and constantly pursues his vendetta against liberals rather than discuss real issues and work with others to solve problems. He’s the most spoiled immature brat that has been in Canadian politics in decades.

Wrong! Conservatives are the ones who are out of touch with affordable housing. Conservatives are the ones who defunded low income housing in Canada back in the late 70s and early 80s which triggered a spiral of homelessness. In Vancouver, the past several years, the conservative made up NPA party has had the majority of councillors in city council, the NPA is run by conservatives with far right conservative ideology. In their time in city council Vancouver has become much more unaffordable, barely any affordable housing has been approve, nothing but high end luxury condos have been given zoning and approval, drug addiction and overdoses have increased, crime has skyrocketed, homelessness has skyrocketed, sidewalks have become overrun with tents, and policing in dangerous neighbourhoods has been decreased. They constantly would make deals with developers of high ends condos giving them zoning authorization in exchange for millions of dollars that were spent back into wealthy neighbourhoods rather than into programs and housing for low income people.

Liberals are much more in tune with affordable housing and doing what need to be done to get it built. For instance, PM Trudeau’s father in the early to mid 70s created a low income housing program that resulted in almost 200,000 affordable housing units to be built across Canada. Shortly after when the conservatives took power, they cut funding drastically and the program to build more of the affordable housing was cut.

Up until 2018, when Vision Vancouver, a Liberal party had the majority in city council, which former Mayor Gregor Robertson belonged to, they approved the most low income housing than any mayor in the city had ever approved, they came up with the idea of temporary modular housing to clear up beds in shelters and to make more space for those transitioning from the streets to housing. Gregor went against several neighbourhood petitions where residents complained about not wanting supportive housing in their neighbourhoods, petitions made by wealthy people who didn’t want low income people in the neighbourhoods. Gregor put getting affordable housing built anywhere in the city ahead of those bogus concerns of rich people. Part of this is why Vision doesn’t get many votes anymore.

And again now under PM Trudeau, many programs are being established for affordable housing across Canada. Programs I’m sure will be defunded if conservatives gain control.

Conservatives are the most of touch and tone deaf when it comes to helping Canadians. They are the ones who put boomers first, they loathe the younger generation. The past few years Liberals have increased spending to make up for all the programs that were cut during Stephen Harper’s time as prime minister.

Um, the citing of Gregor Robertson who's a member of the NDP as evidence for Liberal competence on housing shows that we're speaking different political languages here.

I'm not disputing Conservative incompetence on housing or in general, but that's not the subject of discussion here. Just because the Cons suck donkey balls doesn't mean the Libs haven't shat the bed federally and provincially for decades. Arguing who sucks less hard is pointless, and you can't possibly argue that the natural governing party bears no responsibility for the absolute shitshow of the housing situation that's been in the making for decades.
