But I also live in a smaller town. I think, in cities, it should be normal to go vertical rather than sprawl out.

@StarstruckIllusion I think the thing is there's no planning really regarding what u said about worst planning

 

Suburbs start out small and it's odd to randomly have big buildings there nor does it make much practical sense to have so much density in towns or small cities

 

But in time those suburbs grow to connect to their main metro and it becomes one large city. 

 

Suddenly it's easy to criticize why the heck so many miles are large single family houses with big properties etc in a large metro but go back decades and it made sense. Small population points obviously weren't gonna be dense but as they grew and eventually connected suddenly a lot of towns become one large city

 

But regardless of that fact, once cities reach a certain size as well as metros u can be more practical with higher density but even tho the Toronto area in question in OP reached that threshold a long time ago, the suburbs continue to largely resist allowing higher density in areas where it's totally possible if they simply put some planning into it

 

Fortunately I think attitudes are starting to change as the housing crisis keeps pressing on

 

Mississauga just announced major rezoning and they expect 120,000 new housing units over next 10 years largely from mid to high rise

 

Brampton (my city) is not done with sprawl yet but more condos near downtown have been getting approved last few years and more are approved that have yet to start construction

The issue is that there’s too much single family unit housing and not enough mulitiplexes tbh

Tbh. A house is nice too but it's unfairly creating an affordability crisis for too many cuz it reduces supply and those that don't already own a home now have to pay an arm and a leg for anything

I mean, it's pretty much the fate for many megapolitans cities at one point. Forest of concrete instead of trees. Sad but true.
