Pitchfork gives Taylor Swift’s midnights a 7.0

I hate Pitchfork, but 7 is a fair score. It's an above average pop album for most artists. And a pretty meh album for Taylor. 1989, Reputation, Folklore are all much better, much more complete albums for me.

That’s also something I, as a huge fan of Gaga or Taylor, never understood. Why do I care about the review of some critcs.

The only thing that counts for me is: do I enjoy the music?

Yeah you don't live vicariously through stars you just love their art.

Some people seems to care mainly for the success as if music was taking the backseat.

If their fac flop it hurts them as if their own life was made invalid or something.

The album isn't bad but it' not that good either.

Anti-Hero is the song of the year, but the whole album sounds like it's one and the same song on repeat. I know it's made on purpose for cohesiveness but I'm not a fan of that (same thing with Renaissance and The Weeknd's latest album)

That's what I liked so much about ARTPOP. That it wasn't really cohesive (at least to my ear)

As much as I love and adore Chromatica, I wish it could've been a bit less cohesive

But coming back to Midnights:

yes, I agree. Anti-Hero is the song of the year so far. Haven't heard anything this catchy this year I think. At least nothing I remember. I think cohesive albums are perfect if you're in a specific mood. As I said in another thread, I listened to Midnights during my night walks, which I go on a lot to try to reflect on things that are happening to me at that time. And currently is one of these phases in my life where I do that a lot again (final stages of my PhD and I'm just done, cooked). So for me the album is a perfect fit right now.

All these meltdowns online for WHAT?

7 is already way too generous for an album like Midnights.

And no, breaking records doesn't mean it's an excellent album.

Soft, soothing, and succulent

I was practically begging for the album to just end already

A 70? Interesting, I can't say I agree. Maybe the next album will resonate with me

Finally some objectivity. I'm a Swift fan and even as a Gaga fan I'd say TS>>LG musically, but the overhyping and overrating of this album is too much. I love the album but a lot of it sounds like Reputation album tracks. (NOT a bad thing as I Loved that album) but a masterpiece this is not. Folklore and Evermore deserved all this hype as those are all time great albums IMO. Midnights is great, and better than most MPG albums but it's not some masterpiece I feel the media is making it out to be.

Her success is warranted though and I applaud her for still breaking records this late into her career. She may go down as the biggest artist of all time. And the quality matches the quantity and sales.

No shade but I think a 7 is fair. Midnights is a nice album but it's coming with the hype of a post-Folklore/Evermore and Fearless/Red TV release so that's one of it's advantages and why it's doing crazy numbers. The fans are so dedicated and that's great but the sound is still Lover-ish with maybe 80's influences and has a little bit of her previous stuff (1989, Rep, Folklore, Evermore, Lover) so it appeals to more fans of either genre.

I am a big TS fan, and think records like Red, 1989 and Folklore are all worthy of 9's (Maybe 10 for Folklore), while Evermore, Rep and Lover should be something around an 8.

However, 7 Seems completely fair for Midnights IMO as this one just hasn't hit me in the same way in the ones I list above

Very fair score! Given the reactions online I thought they had scored it lower before I read review. 7 from them is definitely flaunt-worthy
