I mean she’s built up her base and was very strategic in keeping it, the risks weren’t big and she kept growing and hasn’t lost much of her base. 
 

if you compare her to Gaga, which is bad considering Gaga is more of an electro pop artist , she took a huge risk with born this way (albeit it was one that changed the lives of many in the LGBTQ+ community) but it really alienated her straight audience, it wasn’t until ASIB where Gaga got some of it back.
 

taylor took a baby risk with Red and and 1989 because they were more pop, but it wasn’t music praising Judas and preaching gay rights. Taylor is one of the only pop girls (u til recently KINDA) that have stayed very conservative with their music.

To be fair a majority of the audience Gaga gained post ARTPOP are not ex fans  They’re entirely new demographic. The old people and the soccer moms were not singing LoveGame and watching Gaga die on the VMAs and then decided Judas too much.

I mean her audience in 2008-2011 gave her 1.1 million week 1 album sales, something happened in 2011-2013 to drop her down to 250k with ARTPOP. And 201k with Joanne a couple years later.

I completely understand why she isn't to many people's taste. But the simple fact is that she is very, very gifted. Is she annoying, privileged, narcissistic, etc? Absolutely. But she doesn't hide it. She even sings about it on this album. And she hears emotion in music and can scan lyrics in a way her contemporaries simply don't.

I keep on calling "Midnights" a living room album, and in writing this i realized she is our generation's Carole King. Prolific, successful, business-minded, but above all...accessible. I've found it hard to find someone that doesn't have at least one nice thing to say about her. ("I don't listen to her, but..")

I really believe that she, Beyoncé, Rihanna, Bruno Mars, and of course, Lady Gaga...are our generation's absolute legends that will live on forever; alongside the Beatles, Bruce Springsteen, Madonna, Michael Jackson, and so many more.

And sure you can say "they're marketing geniuses/they have bigger budgets/anyone can do what they do/etc" but at the end of the day, people are INVESTING in them. Both with money, but even moreso, with their time. And that to me says others are passionate about them and their pure talent.

lets not pretend that white artists are held to a different standard than POC artists 

ppl like madonna and taylor are mediocre in terms of their level of talent but they appeal to so many white folks in this country - so even if theyre mediocre, a lot of ppl stan them. 

black artists like beyonce, whitney, mj and mariah have to be super-humanely gifted in order to be as relevant as their white counterparts
