Wet Fire 6,841
I don't know...I feel like she's becoming too prolific. The problem with that is (similar to the authors Stephen King or Joyce Carol Oates) though she tries to maintain an average quality, the effort becomes a bit too diffuse. Hence, though there are some really good standouts in Midnights, it suffers from the same flaw that her last two albums did: quite a few songs that sound similar because she isn't experimenting with unique melodies, a few fillers that add nothing to calibre of the album, and not refreshing diversity over the course of a single album. And she can get away without correcting these flaws because she is winning over fans and critics with too much content. The sound isn't very different from her previous records but is a culmination of many. This album is good. Would score it 75-80.

HIM820 1,770
In general, I believe a lot of you are confused by the type of artist Taylor is striving to be, which I think comes down to music history knowledge or your other favorite artists. If you think that a lot of her music sounds or at least feels the same, it probably does and is intentional. She's not really the songwriter who is going to adopt another genre to catch public attention, a practice that became quite famous with Madonna. We have been trained to expect something like this as pop fans (I see the rockga posts constantly) but this isn't always necessary as a songwriter/musician. If anything, artists who used to do this were considered passing fads. Taylor is harkening back to the old singer songwriters she is inspired and compared to. She is looking to be considered a major part of the American Songbook by the time she retires, something I believe her and Lana have pretty much already achieved. They're compared to Joni Mitchell, Carole King, Bob Dylan, Elton John, David Bowie, and Bruce Springsteen. None of these artists had genre shifting music. They used their careers to fine tune their specific sound. I think Taylor just happened to become a big pop act with Red, so we group her in with the other artists when their practice is very different. tomsches 17,325
Im absolutely not a fan of Taylor swift, like at all (to put it VERY nicely)! However, I do appreciate that she’s trying go on a more serious artist/songwriter type of route. I listened to a few songs and I think they were actually pretty good in comparison to other songs by her that I know. But 95? No way!

Taylor has mostly transformed over her career. But unlike Gaga whose transformation is more immediate and varies album to album, Taylor usually aims at a slower transition over the span of 2-4 albums. Hence, from country to pop to singer/songwriter phases. I think she isn't necessarily hearkening back to be equated with one type of image and sound. She will eventually move on to another sound, slowly. From Speak Now to Red to 1989, from Reputation to Lover to Folklore - in cases like these the Red and Lover are like the albums with the middle ground sound. The same album released by a nobody would never have this level of acclaim so it's not only about being deserving imo. I do totally get where you’re coming from and for the most part I agree. I will say tho, this is an exception review wise in terms of pop music it seems along with 3 other albums. Of the top 20 highest scoring albums on Metacritic so far this year, only 4 are from mainstream artists (Taylor, Rosalia, Beyonce, and The Weeknd). The other 16 are all indie and underground albums. Flawless 2,215
People here are praising her songwriting on this album, but I see nothing special this time. Most of her lyrics in Midnights are bland and cringeworthy at times. Folklore and evermore were fantastic, this one....mid. the scars on my mind are on replay. To me it should always be way more indie albums that are included in these top metacritic lists so I fear critics rate it higher for big acts than they would with a smaller one but point taken haha! MrHappy 1,713
For what ? She is a hardworking girl and deserve to be appreciate buttt... albums sound its not something new the concepts and lyrics is there (also some of the lyrics are cringey) but is it really a album that can earn 95 to be honest absolutely no
ALGAYDO 30,627
I like Taylor and thought the album was good, but you’re delusional af if you think she deserved this high of a score it’s obvious she’s either paying these critics to give her abnormally high scores, or the critics themselves are scared of getting doxxed by Taylor’s unhinged fans lol

StressedOut 617
lol I adore her, but 90+ on MC for midnights??? The establishment has decided she can do no wrong. I don't even think it's bad, but definitely sounds more like a 70-80/100 album.
