Ukraine declares Chechnya as ''temporarily Russian-occupied territory''

KYIV, Oct 18 (Reuters) - Ukraine's parliament voted on Tuesday to declare the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria "temporarily Russian-occupied" land in a resolution certain to anger Moscow, which takes a zero-tolerance line on any talk of separatism inside its borders.

Ichkeria is the historical name of Russia's southern region of Chechnya that was devastated by two bloody wars between Russian troops and Chechen separatists after the 1991 breakup of the Soviet Union.

The Muslim-majority region is now headed by Ramzan Kadyrov, a former warlord who emerged out of the devastation and, backed by the Kremlin and huge financial support for Chechnya, now describes himself as a footsoldier of President Vladimir Putin.

It's the same as Russia declaring Catalonia ''temporarily Spanish-occupied'' or declaring Hawaii ''temporarily occupied by the United States'', meaning it doesn't recognize them as integral parts of said countries and is positive to them gaining independence.

I get the reasons why they are saying this but an independent Chechnya with its current regime and ideological landscape would be a nightmare. Imagine Afghanistan but in the Caucasus.

It is brave but you can see why other countries are not doing it. The north Caucasus (the portion of territory in between the Black Sea and Caspian Sea) is Russia's soft underbelly. Historically this is where Ottoman and the Nazi invasions happened.

This region is a place with many ethnic minorities so by default is also more prone to secession. This is why Russia fought so hard to keep Chechnya, because Chechen independence meant Russia was loosing its grip on the north of Caucasus and the other regions might have declared themselves independent too. Recognizing Siberia Yakutia as independent would also anger Russia because it woud undermine its territorial integrity, but in the north Caucasus is becomes even more serious.
