It's not just the rich. Society as a whole consumes more than it needs to and ppl buy stuff WILLINGLY (more so in the developed world)

It takes 2 to tangle

Oil companies, both private and state-owned, have exponentially more resources to invest in legislation that protects their business interests. Car companies have been known to stall investment in public transportation, which keeps people slaves to their cars. Meanwhile some municipalities across the country continue to zone their cities in ways that perpetuate suburban city planning where everyone lives far away from their workplace, because that’s the o only way they can continue to increase their tax base. MEANWHILE consumerism continues to be encouraged by things like planned obsolescence - a hallmark of capitalism.

The tango metaphor doesn’t quite fit. We are literally sheep being herded by decisions that we have no control over unless we resort to violence.

Honestly? Same. I think this will have to be something that we'll have to learn to live with, you're right on that front. Humans simply consume too much, compared to the decades before.

The good news is we've become somewhat better at lowering the CO2 emissions I guess. But we need to do much more before we can say we're safe.

CO2 emissions is just the biggest immediate threat. But between soil erosion, forest and habitat destruction, resource depletion etc we have a lot more to deal with that in time will get worse

Consuming and producing energy without burning fossil fuels helps with the global warming part (tho farming is often an overlooked huge contributed especially in growing meat)... But clean energy doesn't do anything to solve the other issues.

Even recycling is a bit of a veneer. Although whatever we recycle helps not have to consume more resources, ppl would be surprised at how much of what u throw in the recycling bin ends up not getting recycled. Some of it is a capacity problem that can technically be fixed but some of the issue is that current technologies cannot recycle everything nor do they get the entire material back when they do. So resource consumption here still applies

I think part of what makes this idea difficult too is that ppl don't realize how much their purchasing power or incomes have grown because it doesn't feel like it!!!!!

It is true that the rich got a much bigger part of the increase than the rest of us and that's not fair. I wanna be clear that I'm not defending the disparity in anyway

However, a technologically more advanced society has allowed us to devote a lot more resources to purchase things like: electricity, internet, streaming services, heating and cooling, city cleaned water, hot showers, electronic gadgets, a greater number of pieces of clothing for most ppl, restaurant's, haircuts, going out for entertainment etc

Not all that I listed above have that big an impact on environment although some do. But what they have in common is that they are such ordinary things that have become such part of our lives that we don't consider most of those things luxuries anymore. They are just basic necessities. Yet once upon a time they WERE LUXURIES

Now they are more like bills not something u chose to spend money on, more like stuff u HAVE to spend money on cuz it's part of life

But regardless of whether it feels like a bill now and a basic necessity or not, the point is, economic gains even for the middle class that did not gain as much as the top have been enough to give us these things we take for granted now and are part of our standard of living

And because the moment u become accustomed to a standard of living it becomes a "necessity", figuring out how to consume less becomes a massive challange. And I don't claim to have the answers. But I'm pointing out the problem more bluntly than most will

I'm not disputing what u said tho. I agree about the corruption and it's impact

I was surprised at myself for accepting this kind of protest. I the girls seemed very serious and well spoken when coming across their point and they chose to spill over a painting protected by glass. They got their point across, if our planet is wo

Everyone saying that this isn't the right way to go about doing things, like these "net zero" targets and corporate greenwashing campaigns are doing any better at stopping further climate collapse :air: As if simply electing some centre-left government will immediately stop the melting of the ice caps :sharon: The climate crisis doesn't even get any attention unless people do stuff like this, maybe if politicians put their money where their mouths are and dealt with the problem, people wouldn't feel compelled to do these things :lmao:

takes like these are so funny to me, like yea, the net zero goals are worthless at this point

but you be acting like throwing soup at paintings is gonna make more of a change :air:

Sometimes it feels like I've got a war in my mind, I wanna get off but I keep riding the ride

I don't see any sense to this. Go vandalize Exxon, that would at least be logical.

Any kind of "awareness" campaign around global warming is just never gonna be effective imo. We are all already AWARE of global warming. Even the people who either don't believe in it or think it's no big deal are already AWARE of it. They just don't think we need to do anything about it. 🙄

That being said, this performance art protest was very reverse-Warholian of them. :)

I'm more worried about the protection of a historical art piece. Thank you.

Than the protection of...the literal planet?

We have forgotten our public MANNERS
