nATAH 44,183
The musician Rex Orange County, aka Alexander O’Connor, has been charged with six counts of sexually assaulting a woman, the Sun has reported. On 1 June, the 24-year-old allegedly assaulted the woman twice in London’s West End and then four times the next day, including once in a taxi and on three instances at his home in Notting Hill. The woman is reputedly over the age of 16. He pleaded not guilty to all six charges and was released on unconditional bail. In July 2022, O’Connor announced that he was cancelling his upcoming tour dates in Australia, New Zealand and Europe owing to “unforeseen personal circumstances” that meant he was “having to spend some time at home this year” and would “not be able to continue with touring as planned”. article: https://www.theguardian.com/music/2022/oct/10/rex-orange-county-musician-charged-with-six-counts-of-sexual-assault mother, what must i do? Was in CA from May 29 through June 5th. Unless he somehow flew to the UK and back during an interlude at his June 1st Santa Barbara show, it’s just not very likely. https://www.concertarchives.org/bands/rex-orange-county?page=2#concert-table

Specific dates are often the most incorrectly reported thing when it comes to assault and r*pe cases as they are often, especially in instances where an assault happened on multiple occasions, quite easy to mix up. It’s likely these are date approximations rather than hard dates. This would not be moving to trial if the prosecutors didn’t believe that there was a sturdy foundation for a case against him, one built on far more than simply dates. He can prove he was not in the UK on those specific dates, certainly, but I would imagine there’s a lot more on him than just that. Obviously we will watch and see what happens but until he can clearly make a case for his innocence, I’m not interested in supporting him or wishing him well. Repeated, aggravated sexual assault is not an accusation thrown out lightly nor would the legal system waste time prosecuting if they felt it was an unreliable accusation. There is more to this than we know right now or else it wouldn’t be this serious a turn of events.

I know everyone’s brain is different, but this girl was allegedly assaulted 6 times over the span of two consecutive days just a few months ago, and even earlier at the time of reporting it. I feel like in a court of law, she should remember something as simple as the time it happened a bit better. It just ain’t adding up (from what we know rn). But yeah, we’ll see what happens. ssslyboy 3,273
I'm not defending sexual assault (obviously) but why did she keep hanging out with him in multiple locations after he assaulted her the first time on the first day?

Firstly, I’m sorry that this happened to you. Genuinely, it’s a horrid experience and I don’t wish it on anyone. As you said, not everyone’s brains respond to trauma the same way. In the vast majority of SA cases, dates are incorrectly reported. It is so widespread that this is often one of the easiest ways actual abusers get out of trouble. It is up then to authorities to collect additional evidence to support the claim, regardless of date. This happened six times. That’s going to traumatize anyone. It’s a miracle this was reported at all. I was physically abused by my father (not SA, but physical abuse) and the had to go to court against him for a specific incident when he choked me. I could not remember the date, and indeed initially provided in my original report a date in which he was hospitalized and not at home. But the police were able to, via other evidence, determine the correct time frame. This is in the UK meaning that charges could not be filed without approval from the Crown Prosecution Service. They would not approve charges unless authorities could provide ample evidence and prove they could successfully try a case. It is clear they have enough on him. Trauma can make the brain do insane things. It does a number on you. Simple details like dates, locations, times of day, clothes you were wearing, etc can be forgotten. In some cases, people forget entire events because the brain suppresses the trauma. We cannot reasonably expect victims to be perfect victims, remembering specific dates and times. It just doesn’t often work that way. You were able to remember thankfully, but your experience is your own just as my experience is my own—I can’t just expect everyone to forget like I did. It’s a victim by victim basis and we must be patient with all victims, regardless of what they do or don’t get correct.
