This is not really a great idea, but anyways: for the record, it's disputed whether the Russians or Japanese discovered the islands first (more likely it was the Ainus).

You will have to agree is disingenous and very hypocritical for him to push for Russia to be ousted from the Kuril islands when Ukraine received Snake Island in the same way as Russia received the Kurils. Both were unlawfully occupied by the USSR from its neighbours after WW2 and after the fall of the union the newly independent democratic republics of Ukraine and Russia were both granted control over them as heirs to USSR.
