Seeing AHS Hotel for the 1st time!

Hi guys! Some storytime and thoughts!  What better time to get initiated than the 7 year anniversary   

 

Even as a hardcore Gaga stan....

I could never get the gumption to watch this show. 

Lasting only the first 20 minutes of Episode 1 back in 2015, (really, who could have gotten past that horrible drilldo latex monster thing) I finally got brave with the help of my buddy @danbekim and we watched the first episode of Hotel together on my phone and his computer through Discord phone call.   (Godspeed, laptop repair lady, godspeed... )

Dani is an AHS veteran and has seen all the shows at least twice so I felt reassured 

Since I'm an AHS virgin here, and we will be watching the shows 1 time per week, please dont spoil anything in this thread about the next  episodes as I want to be unspoiled for each week

 

Here are some of my thoughts on Episode 1. 

1. Latex drilldo monster thing really weeded out the men from the boys (the brave from the timid?) from this show. If you couldn't stomach that, as I couldn't 7 years ago especially with my mom in the room,  it might just have turned you off to the entire thing. Which it did. For 7 years  I remember going NOPE that's it all those years ago. However, this time, without parental existance during it, it was good to have a friend say, "hey, don't look at this exact part." So I was able to get through it by just turning my head. Still, what the f*ck,  don't put those images in your mind  its nightmare fuel!

2. Gaga's outfits are so beautiful throughout this show and the way the show premiered her cold and calculating character was mindblowing. People on twitter are right, there are no shows on network television that would have dared to have a foursome on tv ending in gratuitous copious blood and murder. Theres a LOT to unpack in that 6 minutes of TV.

 

 

Firstly we see that girl needs some HausLabs  and also we see her doing multiple lines of cocaine so we know that her character has to get amped up to commit double homicide  

The black studded corset thing is really difficult to get into but a helpful yank ( and was it a boot ?) on the back from Donovan solves this problem.

It was also really pretty in general and she likes it too because I think she's running a hand down her stomach to smooth it out / touch herself / get further amped for the evening. Seeing Gaga play this powerful Alpha female character is really empowering and frightening and titillating all at once. We as fans are glad she is happy, we can see she is in her element, and at this stage in late 2014 when she was filming AHS we know it's part of her breakout into acting in a major way... if AHS has 12 episodes , and she's a major character throughout, it almost makes something like a massive 20 hour movie when crammed together.  

It's frightening because she really does a great job of projecting an image of "I have no empathy and will kill to get what I want" energy.  And it's highly charged with even more sexuality than Gaga usually brings to her art. Which has my brain traveling down pathways it has not tread before ---- precisely what these images are meant to do --- emboldening us to the sexual possibilities of the future in our own lives (in my case, zero blood and gore please, and more sex in general)

Somehow when I heard "call housekeeping " I burst out laughing because it reminded me of the same swagger and cloaked ballsiness of "I've switched baristas"

 

The entire outside lets-catch-a-swinging-couple scene was really interesting as well because you can see immediate parallels to Gaga's art from 5 years previously. 

Mobile editing is killing me but check these out!

1922's Nosferatu (a vampire film), reminded me straight away of the iconic-ry of 2009's Bad Romance:

 

Oh, and the vulgar gesture on TV that Gaga makes? Again extremely brave for network television to air such a thing. It makes more sense seeing it as a emote way back when here on GagaDaily.

Mid-late 2015 actually; the show has kind of a quick turnaround and they didn't start shooting until mid July, despite the announcement video months earlier  Also, the vulgarity is kinda normal for a Ryan Murphy project and AHS especially. A major plot point of the very first season Murder House, as well as Apocalypse and Rubber (Wo)man, involves an evil BDSM latex costume of all things

Nonetheless I don't believe I ever actually finished Hotel; I just didn't find it as entertaining as some of the other seasons. But I have weird taste and I'm the only person that loved Apocalypse (as much as it broke the formula by not being stand-alone) so yeah

Ohhhh ok someone was telling me late Artrave era late 2014... still that is cool....I remember a coworkers' son was a security guard there at the hotel/shoot and Gaga would come out of the shoot to smoke and they would smoke together.... i used to be like, hey, have your son call me, I want to hear all the cool stories he's telling you firsthand

As much as I don't like scary movies/shows, I've ALWAYS watched AHS, so when Gaga announced Season 5 Hotel I was so excited!!

Enjoy the show you're going to love it! 

It's not scary in the traditional way, sure there's some jump scare but it's not like hauntingly scary like most horror/thrillers.

I was also excited because during this season it's the first time they connect all the seasons together with Gaga returning to a certain house... I was disappointed when they did the full crossover and Gaga wasn't part of it. She was busy filming her debut leading movie role though so I'm not mad

I love this season!! I think that a lot of people were turned off by the drilldo scene back in the day. It wasn't a great choice especially for the first episode. 

The season has many different plotlines so some episodes have more Gaga than others. Enjoy the ride! Perfect time of year to watch as well

I watched AHS Hotel for the first time around November 2019. I was sick for few days and had to stay at home, so I was kinda bored and found the series on some website (not really legal one I guess, but well...) and I thought "Hey, why not watch the whole thing?" And I did.

I don't wanna spoil you anything, but I can already tell you it's gonna be A-MA-ZING And no - not just because of Gaga (even though she's one of main reasons why).

I think that season was the start of the end of AHS for me cause the story was a mess, but I will be always grateful, Gaga was formally introduced to the actors scene because of it

I really enjoy the story so far minus the gore. The gore is lowkey triggering. 

But the sensuality of Gaga is a lot of fun to see. And i was laughing with Dani on the line, "I grew up walking the streets of New York...."

I was about to say how because you are such a huge fan! But understandable, I’m a big scaredy cat too. I can’t watch horror movies or go to haunted houses.  I think you made it through the worst part though, the latex monster scene was the most disturbing part from that season if I remember correctly.

Episode 7 is the best out of the bunch as it explores The Countess’ back story. Gaga really delivers with her acting there. That episode is also 100% on Rotten Tomatoes

HECK YEAH!!! I was already planning to but you have def inspired me to rewatch the season this month! I loved it when it first came out but honestly haven't seen it again since it aired aside from popular clips across the internet and the fanbase. I'm so excited to soak in the countess fantasy again!
