The way this is probably the same thought people had when they realized the story is about gay characters. What a strange time this is, socially. CheapGin 589
This is an LGBTQ+ story and should be marked as such….serial killers and their victims can be queer too. Not all representation should be positive. It’s not realistic.
Helxig 45,336
You guys are nuts. Tags are specifically used to find series that you might be interested in. You think anyone in their right mind who is looking for specifically LGBTQ will find it satisfying to have this recommended to them? A show about a man who murders gay people? It was clearly a misstep on their part I'll be myself until they fūcking close the coffin.

It is a series that relishes in showing the brutal assaults and murders of young gay men by another gay man. For decades, homosexuals have been portrayed by the right as dangerous oddities that should not be trusted in normal society. Do you really think that a series about a man sexually assaulting, murdering, and in many cases cannibalizing people should be held up next to a show like Heartstopper with the declaration of "THIS is LGBTQ content!"? This is a series made by LGBTQ creators what? RM is gay himself, it's a story about gay characters and gay societal situation at that time. Just because it's about murder doesn't take away the honest showcase about how gay were treated at that time. How is that fundamentally different than any historic gay stories like The Normal Heart or Brokeback Mountain etc.?

River 127,351
The lgbt tag is only used for gaybaiting, netflix did a mistake, they planned to show a hot shirtless guy at the thumbnail too. u guys get it wrong, Netflix wanted to milk this show sexually, like they are doing with every show. many times they give the lgbt tag to tv shows when there is a gay character in only one episode. it’s not the Dahmer story, it’s the glorification and make it sexy and hot that Netflix is trying to make it to be So sploosh your juice all over me you Riverboy
Sneaky Oliver 22,973
I think the show is not defined by LGBT, I mean it’s not the main discussion or focus yeah the characters happen to be LGBT but there are LGBT characters in other shows from other non-LGBT categories The category is for the LGBT content for the sake of being LGBT, the main focus of the show, so the change makes sense to me

It doesn't make it LGBTQ content. Does Ryan Murphy's presence make Ratched or American Horror Story an LGBTQ show? No. Dahmer is not a show about about gay people, about gays of the time, about being homosexual in the time period. It is a show about a serial killer that just happens to be gay who just happened to prey upon gay men. The only relevance sexuality has to this story is that Dahmer was gay and the victims were gay. But like @Sneaky Oliver said above, the presence of gay characters does not mean that that work should be called LGBTQ content. Dahmer's only true, somewhat committed social messages--and I say that very lightly because even it is barely present through the show and when it is present it is a shallow and detached exploration of the idea in the first place--has to do with race, not sexuality. But to say that that is the show's main focus or purpose for existing is giving it way, way too much credit. Dahmer is a show made to target two specific audiences: 1. True crime fans. Dahmer is to them what Madonna or Gaga is to a pop music fan or what The Beatles are to a rock music fan; he is am omnipresent figure that the community obsesses over and has elevated into a celebrity. 2. American Horror Story fans. It was not an accident or a coincidence that Evan Peters was casted in this, and that can be evidenced by the AHS fandom rushing to fawn over this show. This show was not made to be educational, to shine a light on the queer experience in the 70s, or to represent the queer community at all. It was made to cash in on the obsession with the man at it's center just in time to be binged for the Halloween season. @River said it best: Netflix is using this to exploit and profit, absolutely nothing more. It is not well intentioned on any end. It was not made to do any good, bring awareness to anything, to educate anyone on anything. This is a world away from Brokeback Mountain. TEANUS 16,140
Y'all missing the point. Something this show did better than any other Dahmer fictionalization is to show the injustices and signs of the time that were at play to allow him to graze by so many times without getting put away. Not even just that, but they focused so much more on the lives of the LGBTQ+ victims and the injustices they faced in the world prior to meeting Jeffrey and when their families and allies wanted justice. For example, one of the most heartbreaking moments in the show for me was Tony's story. A black, LGBTQ+ man, with a disability nonetheless, just trying to make it like everyone else is given the opportunities to do without question or second looks. He goes through all that just to fall victim to a monster and then for his tragedy not to be taken seriously because of it involving LGBTQ+ men and a black victim. In a time in history when people are pushing for reteaching and relearning more than ever, this is the kind of content we need. There's a lot of layers to this show, and taboo, illegal, gruesome sexual fantasies are a part of that, they don't need to be glorified or for people to act like people are actually thinking Jeffrey was in the right to still allow the other themes to be just as important or intriguing of a reason for viewers to watch the show British social ladies with upturned pinkies, glasses clinking // xoxoTEANUS

So many things wrong w this post idk where to begin so I guess I’ll go chronologically. You don’t think AIDS, violence within, etc. weren’t partially facilitated by a society that forced the LGBTQ+ into the shadows with little to no help from society back then? You don’t think Dahmer’s grandma was embarrassed to call the police when she caught him drugging that man because he brought home a man, let alone a black man? You didn’t hear the part about how the officers were so detached from the reality of the case that all they could focus on was cleansing themselves to avoid “catching AIDS”? You don’t think the media frenzy itself initially wasn’t partially facilitated with the publics horror at the “taboo” lives of the gay people? And that the nature of this case didn’t fuel homophobic stereotypical fires that were already raging to begin with? Y’all seem like oppositionist people rather than people who genuinely care about how gay people are represented or how we can raise awareness for our grievances Also, regarding the second to last paragraph, with that thinking I presume you may say Gaga released BTW in 2011 to capitalize on the self-empowerment movement if you weren’t a Gaga fan. Rather than thinking there just may underlying themes and influences at play other than the obvious or first assumed British social ladies with upturned pinkies, glasses clinking // xoxoTEANUS
TEANUS 16,140
For clarity, I’m not saying this show is perfect, it has its problems and debates like any other good form of art for media. It’s just that in my opinion, we deserve any kind of slightly positive awareness that could teach even just one person to have empathy and acceptance for one another, and this show has lots of powerful moments that could do that. I hope I didn’t come off too harsh at any point, I see all of your thoughts and feelings, you are seen, but I was deeply emotional at parts of this show British social ladies with upturned pinkies, glasses clinking // xoxoTEANUS
