I quickly listened to a few songs again before  going to work and Sorrowful Soil really made me cry and made me want to visit and reconnect with my mother more.

Midnight local, so if it's the 30th for you then it's already out!

I’ve just listened to it for a third time so I think I can give my first review. It’s Björk though, so my first thoughts might change over time.

overall, I think it’s one of her best albums. It amazes me how she’s still getting better and still deliver things that I have never heard before. It’s so beautiful, haunting, interesting and fun. When I listened to it for the first time last night, I called it a middle finger to music but in the best possible way. She really took us to her underworld and it sounds amazing. There are some songs that still need to grow on me, though. Generally, it sounds so different from what I was expecting. It’s very diverse but cohesive at the same time. I love all the processed vocal bits, they are so fun to listen to. My first criticisms would be that some songs sound a bit random at times and in terms of cohesiveness I think using flutes, violins and clarinets sometimes take me out of the Fossora world. Like, ancestress and allow almost sound like they’re from different albums.

Lets see:

Atopos - When I first heard it a month ago it wasn’t at all what I was expecting. I didn’t love it when I first listened to it. I thought it was lacking a good melody. I went 180 on this one. I think it’s a standout track and I actually love the melody and the outro, it’s actually pretty catchy once you figured it out for yourself.

Ovule - This is probably one of the more straightforward pop songs (in terms of Björk at least). I instantly loved it. It’s just very sweet and cute.

Mycelia - When I first listened to it I was like „here we go“. It’s couldn’t stop laughing. It’s such a fun track but really interesting at the same time. I don’t know what it is about those processed vocals but they sound so soothing and pleasing to me.

Sorrowful Soil - Now this one has made me cry 3 times so far. It’s insanely beautiful and as I’ve said before, it made me want to spend more time with my mother and show her more appreciation for everything she’s done for me. She did well…

Ancestress - This is one of the songs that, while I like it, doesn’t blow me away. I like the chorus and the verses but to me there’s a bit too much going on with the violins, Björks voice, the bells and the synths. I like the song but to me the soundscape is a bit too chaotic to fully enjoy it.

***urt - I actually like the abrupt beginning and ending, as well as the short length. I haven’t read any official interpretations yet but for me the song is supposed to symbolize how live can begin and end suddenly and sometimes much too short.

Victimhood - Absolutely love the beginning. I was a bit nervous to listen to it because people were saying it’s really depressing. And it is. It’s very dark and sad. Midway through the song when it starts to get weird she loses me a bit. That’s the part of the song that I still don’t get.

Allow - I like it. It’s cute. I feel like it would make more sense on Utopia and instead Losss could make more sense on Fossora but it’s a cute little song.

Fungal City - I honestly don’t get the hype. I don’t hate it but it doesn’t do much to me yet.

Freefall - Same as Fungus City. I think it’s a good song, but it’s one of the songs that still have to grow on me. Maybe because it’s a challenging song so late in the album.

Fossora - this is an amazing song. One of my favorites. Absolutely insane, incredible, gorgeous, amazing. When I first heard it I had a similar reaction as with Mycelia. It just made me laugh out loud several times. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

Her mother’s house - One of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard. Also made me cry a few times so far. Everything about it is perfection to me.

I'm very late, but finally gave the full album a listen. Most of the tracks are great, I like this album significantly more than Utopia. Bjork deserves the Grammy, I hope she gets it!
