Russians withdrew from most of Kharkiv oblast

After many months of de facto stalemate, with Russia being unable to advance past certain positions and Ukraine unable to regain major areas, the last days saw a major shift in the development of the war in Ukraine. Ukraine was able to liberate a very significant amount of territory, including important cities such as Kupyansk, possibily Izyum, Vovchansk and Kozacha Lopan, meaning the entire Kharkiv front collapsed. The information coming out is not completly clear, but it seems that the Russians already left or are going to leave the entire area west of the Oskil river and all positions south of the 1991 Russian-Ukrainian border.

(Maps are already oudated) - this is how live.maps displays the situation today:

Ukrainians are moving towards the border towns in northern Kharkiv, an area with active fighting for a very long time, and already regained control over settlements such as Hoptivka and Kazachya Lopan. There are unconfirmed rumors that Ukrainians crossed into Russia proper, in Belgorod region - while this is pretty certainly false, the fact that such rumors exists shows the impressive extend of Ukraine's gains during this phase of the war.

At the same time, fighting is happening in other places such as south of Lyman, in Kodema, along the frontline in entire Donetsk region and in Kherson (where Ukraine's progress is slower and less note-worthy).

Many are saying Ukraine's succes comes down to its intelligent approach to information warfare. Ukraine made it seem like it wanted to retake Kherson, giving such statements during the entire summer and even announcing it specifically at the end of August. The Kherson counter-offensive at first allowed Ukraine to make some gains, however, it seems that the true goal was always in the north which was left unattended.

Some commentators are now talking about Ukraine potentially retaking all of its provinces back and the Russian Federation collapsing, however, it's important to keep in mind that while impressive, Ukraine's recent gains still don't mean Russia definetively lost the war.

  • FfFfFfFF changed the title to Russians withdrew from most of Kharkiv oblast

@FfFfFfFF what do you think is happening? Is Russia doing another strategic move, withdraw troops to concentrate them in other positions because they can't control or further attack all those places? Like they did in the beginning? Or it's all due to Ukraine being successfully retaking their territories cause they are overpowering Russia on the war?

It would be so wonderful if russians could put an end to this by screwing Putin out of power ( it's a freaking dictatorship, my hope it's for the people to open their eyes and find a way to get rid of him).

Anyways it's a great development, gave me hope that Ukraine can keep resisting and possibly retake their territory.

They were caught by surprise because they moved a big part of their troops from Kharkiv to Kherson over the summer. It was a trap and they were caught in it.

The more times passes the more it seems that the Russians are more supportive of the regime, especially with the sanctions many will feel like they were punished unfairly by the West and turn even more anti-Western. Putin has support so it's pretty unlikely a revolution or civil war will take place to remove him. Also, it's important to note it would still be a mistake to think Ukraine's recent succes means it will take everything back: people still need to be cautious to this idea because we don't know what will happen next. Russia may even attack again in direction of let's say Odesa someday, if it has the possibily.. Russia was threateneing Moldova with separatism in Gagauzia the other day.

It was a question of strategy i see, a clever one by the Ukraine army. It seems Russia was indeed caught by it. But yeah, i too think that unfortunately the conflict i far from getting over and Ukrainians will have sadly to endure the conflict and the destruction  and deaths that will bring. It's so misfortuned that russians fail to see what Putin represents, a dictatorship, i don't how anyone can think that staying in power so many years it's a good thing. For instance, surely the politicians from my country blame everything on the war in Ukraine,  the inflation and how everything it's overpriced, but that doesn't bring them sympathy, or excuse them from having bad decisions or being corrupters or interfering with peoples freedom of speech and criticism.

Anyways it was  great news, better than getting news that Russia is overtaking more territory and bombarding more cities.

I blame the literal brainwashing and cleansing that happened during URSS times. They literally absolished the idea of going against the official authorithy and exterminated the ones opposed to the regime (millions of pp). The ones left are more docile to the propaganda, especially aggresive propaganda that they are subjected to 24/7.
