Demi Lovato regrets making documentaries about herself

Demi Lovato has some regrets about making so many documentaries about herself. During a recent interview with Alternative Press, the singer reflected on her second decade of life just days before turning 30 on August 20th.

Honestly, I’m really sick of watching myself, and I think other people probably are, too," the singer told the magazine. "And if they aren’t, then they can watch my music videos. […] I wish I would have waited until I had my sh*t figured out more because now it’s cemented. Sobriety is what works for me and nothing else. […] My story’s not done, so I want to be able to say by the time I’ve written a book, ‘OK, this is me grown up.'”

Since 2012, Demi has released three documentaries, Demi Lovato: Stay Strong in 2012, Demi Lovato: Simply Complicated in 2017, and Demi Lovato: Dancing With The Devil in 2021.

And as for their music? Lovato is fairly certain that their rock era is here to stay. After all, they’re just trying to embrace the joy they felt when they began making music. “Maybe one day I'll do an acoustic album,” Lovato ponders aloud. “But I think that my pop-R&B days are gonezo.”

Tbh I thought Gaga might feel similarly about 5F2 and Joanne. Don't get me wrong, a lot of good came from it. But her "futile" comment, during the Zane Lowe interview, regarding Joanne era points to this.

That's the thing with making art though, it generally encapsulates a time in your life. And sometimes, you grow quickly away from those feelings or part of yourself. Definitely understand what Demi is saying regarding "California Sober" etc

i wonder how much work it took to convince gaga to do 5F2 in the first place, considering how shut off she was post ARTPOP :gum:

I'm not sure, she did briefly mention about her last time being followed by a camera was BTWB. Not sure she likes it, but I'm hoping we get more documentaries tbh...

I love her documentaries tbh Dancing With The Devil is easily the best out of the three but I get where she’s coming from, I love “California Sober” the song and all of her records (she’s never missed) but I get why she doesn’t identify necessarily with that music/message anymore.

What futile comment did she make? Is this in the Chromatica interview?

I think Gaga has a better understanding of who she is and who she was. I get the impression of a layering effect, with every new year, album, or era adds another part of her as an artist. 5F2 was authentic to her at the time, and really broadly explained her pain to people who might not have known or understood it. I think for that alone she might look at it fondly. Also documenting the super bowl performance I think was important to her even though that’s not what it was all about.

Demi, and honestly lots of stars who came from that era, constantly try to correct their past selfs. Miley is like this as well. Obviously Demi does it to a whole other degree, but I’ve been curious as to why it’s so common for them. I’ve never gotten the impression that Gaga has tried to erase or even overlook a part of her career. Yes, the jokes about ARTPOP are there, but I think that’s more of a comment about where she was at the time not how she feels about it now.

If I remember correctly she said it was futile because it didn’t heal her dad. Not necessarily because she’s unhappy with the album or that era.

She said Joanne was a futile effort in healing her father in the Zane Lowe interview.
