Future Lovers 7,590
Yes it’s a scary situation but it is also an extreme and rare one. Don’t get swept up in the rush of panic that comes with news like this, this is not a widely occurring thing. That being said, pilots are being overworked. Just because it’s rare for them to be falling asleep while autopilot is flying the plane doesn’t mean that they aren’t in need of more rest than they get. They’re used to flying long hours, but the industry needs to offer them more time off and more ground time period.
KORG 4,756
I only fly with bigger airlines for this reason. The less-known ones usually cut corners to save money but cut the corners on staff levels & safety... which is a big fat nope.

The less-known ones usually cut corners to save money but cut the corners on staff levels & safety... which is a big fat nope. Ethiopian Airlines is Africa’s largest airline. With a modern and well maintained fleet. As well as a good strategy to lead aviation in sub Saharan Africa for decades to come. to add to that. The airline is not perfect when it comes to its pilots and flights attendants. . almost all airlines fly with a double cockpit crew for flights over 10 hours. ET doesn’t do that. Pilots can be on duty non stop for up to 18 hours at a time (stage length of their longest flights) and are only given 10-12 hours to rest for their long flight back. (other airlines afford pilots 24-48 even up to 72 hours rest after an ultra long haul flight) on a long flight with an intermediate stop (example: Addis Abeba-Lomé-São Paulo), with proper fatigue management, the crew must be changed at Lomé to continue the flight to Brazil while the crew who flew the first leg rest in Lomé until the plane is back from Brazil to then board the flight again and fly it to Addis . Ethiopian also doesn’t do that. That make their crew fly the whole length. Ethiopians problem is lack of fatigue management for their flight crew. sure u want to fire the pilots, so they never fall asleep en route again. But will that avoid this incident from happening again if they don’t change their ways?

Ethiopian Airlines pilots are one the most overworked flight crew in the industry. Nobody except ET give 10 hours (sometimes 8!) rest after a long haul flight. this was a short haul flight, still they are overworked. Just flying multiple shorter sectors a day with minimal can more fatiguing that a long haul flight.

That's small.. however they service way more destinations than alot of airlibes, meaning... somethings got to give.
