I think that’s the thing for me, if he actually came out I’d be forgiving.  His entire persona though is what his straight, white female fans think being “gay” should be.  He talks about not needing to label things, what gay sex should be on screen… like just come out girl, you’ve got a lot of opinions on things you claim to not be 

But he won’t, cause I don’t think he’s gay or even “queer.”  That’s a straight, white man in an ugly dress, Maury.

YYYYUP ! And tbh, I understand that coming out is a delicate decision and involves considering factors of safety. But I’m inclined to believe the major danger he faces is danger of losing adoration of women who want to f*ck him, or losing homophobic fans who don’t wanna listen to a queer man sing. He’s rich, he’s in a queer friendly line of work, being gay won’t stop him from continuing to be an artist. Is his mom deeply homophobic or something and that holds him back? I don’t understand the idealized color blind attitude he has about sexuality. But whatever lol

 

And for the record to his point about the illegality of it all- being gay is still illegal in many parts of the world... and that’s just one reason why representation and “labels” still matter bc those labels are used to murder, incarcerate, and criminalize people across the globe

People are being overly obtuse about this. He's referring to the fact that gay sex tends to be represented as a monilith of rough **** from behind and is not shown to be multidimensional with passion and variety. Straight people in general see their sex portrayed in a greater variety of ways. People went wild over White Lotus even suggesting rimming which had rarely been shown in mainstream media.

Where on earth is that monolith being represented? Especially today when we have the likes of Moonlight, Heartstopper, Call Me By Your Name, God's Own Country, etc showing gay tenderness. He's speaking so ignorantly about gay films when it's been done in popular media for years.

I don't think it's an ignorant comment. Andrew Rannells literally talked about having to teach the crew of Girls how gay men have sex facing each other. God's Own Country was not a widely seen film and Call Me By Your Name pretty notoriously minimized scenes of actual sex. There is certainly progress n recent years but that doesn't undo a historical trend.

In film and media for decades? In one of the best known Best Picture nominated gay films Brokeback Mountain. Decades of films that associate gay sex with violence and depravity like Cruising and The Detective. The existence of counter examples does not mean there is no history to which those examples run counter.
