Polio outbreaks incited regular panics decades ago, until a vaccine was developed and the disease was largely eradicated. Then on Friday, New York City health authorities announced that they had found the virus in wastewater samples, suggesting polio was probably circulating in the city again.

The state Health Department said in a statement the discovery of the virus underscored “the urgency of every New York adult and child getting immunized, especially those in the greater New York metropolitan area.”

The announcement came three weeks after a man in Rockland County, N.Y., north of the city, was diagnosed with a case of polio that left him with paralysis. Officials now say polio has been circulating in the county’s wastewater since May.

“The risk to New Yorkers is real but the defense is so simple — get vaccinated against polio,” Dr. Ashwin Vasan, the New York City health commissioner, said in a statement. “With polio circulating in our communities, there is simply nothing more essential than vaccinating our children to protect them from this virus, and if you’re an unvaccinated or incompletely vaccinated adult, please choose now to get the vaccine.”

I also hate how becoming vaccinated has become this personal choice like “my body, my choice,” and we’re not supposed to shame someone over that choice. Like no Geraldine somethings you don’t have a choice over.

I think that nut job doctor that claimed autism was caused by vaccines really started the anti vaxx mess. Even though it isn't true, I'd rather have an autistic child than one that is dead because of polio.

Really happy I got a polio booster in 2017. I was getting some travel vaccines and my doctor said “I’ll just give you all the free ones too”  So I got boosted for all the basic childhood stuff. At the time I just thought it was kinda funny, but with the way things are going these days I’m really grateful

Just so everybody is aware, the return of devastating diseases like polio, measles, mumps etc is 100% because of the antivax movement. We had all but wiped them out, and now they're back because we don't have heard immunity. It is directly their fault

I think the only consolation here is that at least the impacts on others from antivaxxers is a bit different than from Covid-19

 

Measles and Polio and these viruses resurging are more stable than influenzas or coronaviruses meaning the same vaccines work for a very long time and that population stays protected meaning it's the antivaxxers themselves that are put at risk... If u still have ur shot, u should be good

 

In the case of Covid-19 it was worse cuz it mutates so much so more cases are a problem and also the vaccine wasn't as effective so if u increase spread u increase risks that someone who got vaxxed still got really ill

 

That being said they will still affect others in the sense of putting strain on healthcare system, costs, lost work productivity etc
