Women seem to have more social inhibitions when it comes to sex. I suppose fear of things like abuse and rape also make them less comfortable to open up so quickly and easily which is understandable

Also pregnancy

Your threads are often well put together, very informative but your defense of this homophobic rhetoric is completely unnecessary. The cultural relativism that this stigma has in the context of LGBT people & how we are viewed in the Western world has absolutely everything to do with why using this language is not just irresponsible. The language & terminology is dangerous & hateful.

I think that's a little harsh on the OP.

Health Canada is making an honest, stastically-backed statement for the sake and welfare of the LGBTQ+ community. Correct me if I'm wrong, but gay men do (or at least did) account for 98% of cases. That's not a judgment on gay men like myself, it's just how it is.

Anonymous sex and hookup culture is more common among gay men partly because of societal and personal homophobia preventing many men from having more committed relationships. There's nothing wrong with hookup culture, it just carries more health risks (like it does for women).

Health Canada want to make sure the people who are currently most vulnerable to getting the disease from spreading are aware so they can prevent its spread.

If anything, I'm more concerned about it growing. If monkeypox does spread to wider society, that's where homophobia will really grow. Gay men will be blamed and the stigma be back in full force.

I understand why their wording could be deemed offensive given the context. But I personally am not offended, as the intent isn't to persecute us, it's to protect the community and society from illness. Especially as early signs suggest it can make children very ill.

And if anyone is reading this, check if can get an Imvamune vaccine in your local area. I got mine last week in Mississauga and it was easy. I'll be limiting my partners too.

I think that's using the term way too loosely tbh

It's a medical fact at this time that between 95% to 97% of cases so far are concentrated in non-heterosexual males

Her wording may not have been very sensitive and I myself wouldn't have said it like that... But to say focusing on a group of ppl when the date is irrefutable is homophobic I think is an overstatement

I'm worried for all of those will become infected & go undiagnosed because of the stigma & fear of being seen as part of this community(straight, closeted or LGBT). If we continue to only suggest that LGBT people get vaccinated & base the criteria for being able to get vaccinated on that characteristic, how long until the situation becomes an amalgamation of what we've experienced with COVID, AIDs & other movements that were targeted & stigmatized, leaving millions infected & untreated?

I think guys are also more likely to just be attracted and want sex based on looks. Some women too, but I know a lot of women like me who need at least some emotional attachment to want sex with someone. It's not just society pressure or fear of abuse, we genuinely can't want that just by looking at someone.

Just A Holy Fool

More politically correct this time around, but all statements from government like this will do is incite another gay disease panic. Just tell everyone to avoid high risk behaviour, why specifically target one group over another?

They're not lying.

I say this as a gay person myself, this culture of quick hookups is not only toxic but creates a lot of health risks. Don't get mad at doctors for telling you the truth. There are many easily transmissible diseases that you can catch everytime you have sex. The reason why they tend to be more prominent among LGBT people is because LGBT men tend to be a lot more sexually active. It's not a special gay gene that makes you more likely to catch it, it's your own actions and lack of moderation. This is a quote from someone who got it, below, and it's clear that the more you engage in sex with strangers the more likely you are to get it.

Asking the gay community to be even MORE selective? The standards are already so high :bradley:

I mean, it'd be OK if they asked people to be more "selective", why gay and bisexual men? Not every gay or bisexual man is promiscuous, and if we're like that, what would be the problem? Is monkeypox only dangerous to gay and bisexual men? So ridiculous turning this into a gay/bisexual men thing. Also it is not only transmitted sexually, which makes this even worse. I'm so tired of things like this.

:madge:

It's extremely rampant among MSM tho, don't take it as anything personal. He's addressing a community that is the most at risk

This is very “All Lives Matter” energy.

One specific demographic is making up around 98% of cases. That’s why the effort is being focused there first.

I mean, I do get your point and I quite agree with you. Maybe I didn't express myself properly. What worries me about this is that this might create a stigma around the virus/disease as it happened with HIV and AIDS, because certain groups will take any opportunity they have to turn things against minorities. I think it's perfectly fine to try to protect the group that is the most at risk, but maybe the wording should've been different.

Why are white gays throwing temper tantrums because they are being asked to not indulge in orgies for a few months? 2 years ago, we were not allowed to ****ing go for a run or a walk without wearing a mask even in an empty park.. this is ridiculous.. Your orgies can wait.

The advise here in Australia was better imo. They did say most cases involved gay or bisexual men but also clarified this is in big part due to gay men testing for STD/HIV a lot more often as part of their routine Vs heterosexual men and women. So obviously more LGBTQ+ men would come up as positive to monkey pox as well.

Maybe manage everyone to take the vaccine easily and worry about cleaning that line at the back of y'alls crack after taking a poopy poop :huntyga:

99% of the cases in the us, if i remember correctly, are in gay/bisexual men. it’s not problematic to suggest having heightened awareness of physical intimacy (sex or not, even rubbing on skin is enough) for the most at risk group currently based on statistics. this is not homophobic. i’m sorry, it’s not. touting it as a “gay” disease is, and of course there’s a fine line. but saying to be more cognizant? hmmm idk about that

Maybe simply because it’s currently almost exclusively in the gay community?  Stop trying to make this something it’s not.

I swear y’all always looking for reason to be persecuted (saying this as a gay man).
