Head Empty 25,060
I used to be a fan of the whole "acts" concept. But I'm getting tired Why are musicians, filmmakers and even video game developers massively leaning into segmented releases? Nowadays it seems like artists only do it because it's a (profitable) trend, rather than for genuine creative reasons. Not singling out Beyoncé for this specifically, just to be clear. (Edited some parts to be a bit more nuanced) Happiness will never last, darkness comes to kick your ass... ᵃˢˢ 🕺

I don’t doubt that’s there’s profitability partly behind it, but come on, you’re acting like this is a new thing. Movies have been in parts or acts for decades and decades, Shakespeare plays were in acts and parts as well. And going back to the days of Homer, nobody said ‘Why did you have to make The Ilium and The Odyssey? Why can’t you just make one piece of work that stands on its own feet?’

Sometimes a journey of expression of a piece of work is too big to fit into one volume. However, there's usually one volume that stands out more than the others and is remembered. I'll give some examples (non music based): Wizard of Oz has 14 books in the series... most people are only aware of one, some are aware of 3, very few know all 14... but the story is incomplete without them. Imagine them being squished into one volume. Lord of the rings is another one. Alot of people have seen these, but fewer have seen the prequels. The piece is too big to fit into one volume. Vincem 380
Everyone look at this project as if it was a multipart recording. What if act i was the album, act ii was a movie and act iii was the tour?

Why can’t you just make one piece of work that stands on its own feet?’ There are plenty of examples where it's executed well, and I'm not saying a piece of work will automatically be of poor quality when it's split into acts. Some of my favorite media is split into parts. But in the last two months alone at least three artist I follow released a segmented album. The fact that it's becoming so trendy again makes me more suspicious of how genuine it is. From a marketing perspective, it's a good way to retain your audience, and record labels surely have realized it as well. Of course these are all assumptions on my part. But the more I see it happening, the more skeptical I become. Again, I'm not trying to discredit Beyoncé as an individual. I'm still interested in the project + I think GagaDaily is too harsh on her as is. This is just my gut reaction to seeing this new peak in segmented releases.
