In the aftermath of Uzbekistan's government attempt to strip off Karapalkstan of autonomy, which prompted riots in which 18 people were killed, talks emerged of the possibility of a new secessionist movement in Central Asia.

Even though the Uzbek government backed down, Parapalkstan might eventually try to pursuit its constitutionally-granted right to become independent and this July's clashes might mark the beginning or catalyst of such change.

Karapalkstan is a heavily underlooked region in Central Asia, currently part of Uzbekistan and formerly part of URSS. Despite having a distinct ethnic and cultural identity to Uzbekistan, it never seemed to have leaned towards secession or independence prior to 2022.
