It gets messier if you consider that a big part of Russia irredentist identity is the fact that it sees itself as the Third Rome and wants to highlight a continuity with the Second Rome aka Byzantium.

History did them dirty. They are numerous enough of a population and living in a continous territory that they would have made sense as a nation.
