Of course you can have dark musicals, but I think the issue some people are having is trying to connect a musical (even a dark one) to the tone of the universe that was set up in the first Joker movie. If this was a standalone movie, I don't think people would've had as much of a visceral reaction to it. Not saying that it can't be done, but I think it needs to be executed pretty much perfectly for it to work out right and for the majority of people to like it. Speaking from firsthand experience, psychotic symptoms lead to such a warped perception of reality, even music. Cmon now. If she is thinking about it then she has a great reason for it. Also as a movie fan I can guarantee you Joaquin would never look at a bad script and decide to do it if it’s bad.
