Spotify Push For QR Code Verification For Account Sharing Plan, With One Year Penalty

Spotify is rolling out a new method of cracking down on Family plan sharing, with “QR code verification” that’s not particularly hard to work around, but has major consequences if you miss the window.

Cracking down on password and/or account sharing has become very common in the world of streaming subscriptions, and Spotify is now trying a new method of limiting the use of its Family plan through a new method – QR code verification.

Spotify details this on a support page, explaining that Family plan members may need to “verify they live with the plan manager by scanning a QR code.” The code appears on the device of the plan manager and is scannable following a pop-up that appears on the device of members of the plan.

Spotify explains the process:

The plan manager opens the QR code on their phone. Find it by tapping your profile picture, then Your Premium, then Manage.

The plan member scans the QR code with their phone camera.

Both the manager and member need to be in the same place to complete the scan.

Users on Reddit spotted this rolling out, adding that the QR code changes “every few seconds.” That makes it harder for a screenshot of the page to be used to complete the process.

If you miss the 7-day window for scanning the QR code, the consequences are major. Spotify says that users that miss the window “can’t join a different Family or Duo plan for 12 months,” but can still sign up for their own Individual plan. Otherwise, they’re automatically pushed down to the free plan as soon as the window closes.

Ok I understand it, but what happens if someone is out of town for some reason? :duck:

Your family plan covers up-to 4 accounts. This is more to do with account sharing where more than 4 people use the accounts. I think it would be stupid to limit to living in the same home though like Netflix does, since many people use it when they go to university/college.

But it's called family plan, not live under the same roof plan...

I have a family plan and was gonna put my sister on it as my third but I'm 99% sure it said you had to share the same residence. It wouldn't be hard to check that either and I love Spotify too much to risk losing it :rip:

OT: Sharing an account is crazy 'cause why would I want anyone else's chopped ass taste messing with my algorithm?! :cryga: almost every song Spotify recommends to me is a banger and I'd very much like to keep it that way :cryga:

I mean the free plan aint that bad. So i'm not convinced this will see the same level of uptick Netflix achieved.

Plus unlike tv streamers, 95% of music catalogues are identical across streamers with only a narrow number of platform locked specials (which are already pirated to **** lol).
So unless competitors crack down in similar ways, this could actually push people onto competitors who have less restrictive controls.
