„Inspired by the empowering music of the ‘90s, Gaga told Billboard that she wanted to create a “freedom record” that didn’t beat around the bush: “I want to write my this-is-who-the-f–k-I-am anthem, but I don’t want it to be hidden in poetic wizardry and metaphors.” She followed through, with lyrics like, “No matter gay, straight or bi / Lesbian, transgendered life / I’m on the right track, baby / I was born to survive.” Fans responded positively, as the song debuted at No.1 on the Hot 100 and remained there for six weeks.“

A lot of you are probably too young to understand how monumental this song was back in 2011!

I can't be arsed explaining everything in a very nuanced way, but very basically: Being gay was not okay back then, 90% of the general population didn't even know transgender was a thing, to talk about gay people was considered 'dangerous to your public image' or 'career suicide' and was something that no popstars would every dare do (a stark contrast to 2022 where every single brand and celebrity capitalises on pride month)... and Gaga wrote this song anyway and put it out as her lead single and promoted the sh.it out of it... and somehow, given the anti-gay climate at the time, it still hit radios everywhere and went number one.

I can't explain to you how crazy it was to hear 'no matter gay, straight or bi, lesbian, or transgender life' on the RADIO. The first time I ever felt like maybe I could be myself in this cold world

I'll be myself until they fūcking close the coffin.

This is the song that saved my life while I was just a 20 year old boy from a third world country where there are no gay rights and homophobia is the norm.

Took words right out of my mouth. I was 18 and was just realising that I am different from the rest and literally wanted to end my life. :cyanlights:

And then this song came out of nowhere and pulled me out of the trenches. It literally saved my life. :bradley:

The song was so oddly beautiful when I first heard it back in 2011. The spoken bridge, the chaotic production adding a glittery vibe to the singing, the weird ass intro - all of it was so unique. It was the time I became a little monster. Now when I look back, the fact that I was so internally comfortable with my sexuality when I was 13 was because this song was outright, to the point and celebratory. It made me feel that being gay is something cool. And I'm not being hyperbolic. Even though the surroundings were adverse, my mind felt free and brave.
