The long-awaited second Avatar film has received a title: Avatar: The Way of Water. What’s more, fans will get their first glimpse at the film beginning next week, as a teaser trailer will be shown prior to screenings of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness on May 6th. Following its theatrical premiere, the teaser will debut online a week later.

Set to hit theaters internationally on December 14th and in the US on December 16th, Avatar: The Way of Water is the first of four sequels in James Cameron’s blockbuster franchise.

I am rooting for movie theaters, but after Disney bought Fox and made it basically a glorified streaming division by yanking all its films off the theatrical schedule besides Avatar...I really want to watch this ish tank in a multibillion dollar junk pile. Because Disney deserves.

I'm just thinking... if the first sequel took 13 years to make, how are they making 3 more of them :air: we'll get to the last one in 39 years :ladyhaha:

From what I've read, they're shooting the sequels back to back and they will be released every other year, so 2022, 2024, 2026 and the last one in 2028 :lana:

I wonder how sequels will do, first movie was released so many years ago and it felt completed imo. and to release these movies now feels … interesting.

Personally, I don’t think they’ll be anything earth shattering. What helped the first one was all the buzz around the new filming/motion capture techniques and the rise of new 3D tech rolling out to theaters.

No one really cares about 3D anymore and I think several theaters scrapped it (or just no 3D movies have been released lately?). Also CGI and motion capture has evolved so much in 13 years, they don’t have that advantage anymore either.

I’m afraid it took wayyyy too long for a sequel that was already allegedly planned from the start. It lost its necessary momentum. A 13 year gap just made the franchise a running joke.

yes, exactly my thoughts.

I do believe sequels can flop hard, but we’ll see I guess.

But they have too much to lose if a flop would born, so I hope the sequels were strongly worked in the writing room (im not a big fan of the first avatar but still curious)
