But I think the more important notion to take from this is Tom chose the role, he's obviously secure enough to play a queer character (if he is straight), in this regard, why does it matter what his sexuality is? It has no bearing on his performance. Furthermore, why ask someone's sexuality during a press conference, rude.

It's not like he was Eddie Redmayne playing a trans character and the movie is all about transness, or Sean Penn playing Harvey Milk and it being all about his fight for gay rights. Tom Hardy's film didn't revolve around the LGBTQ+ experience. That's the difference, for me, anyway.

I think it's semantics, really. Nothing is wrong with experimenting and figuring out your sexuality. But for decades, "just a phase" has been used to explain gay people away and minimize their experience.
