what went wrong: shawn + camila?

lowkey thought they were gonna be the next jelena/britney+justin. however, instead of having the relationship boost their status, they both flopping these days. 

before getting together (<summer 2019):

- shawn: if i can't have you debuted at number 2 (keep in mind this was one month before "senorita")

- camila: had a few underwhelming collabs after "havana" + "never be the same" but just recently came off touring with TAYLOR (taylor's highest grossing tour to date)!!!

during: 

- senorita was successful

- romance underperformed by a lot. more than half the streams on the album just comes from "senorita"/

- wonder underperformed but it didn't do terrible. it debuted at number 1 and charted for 14 weeks. it was his first album to not chart on billboard 200 for over 100 weeks. the singles did alright tho. (billboard 100: monster debuted at 8 and wonder debuted at 18)

after (2022)

- camila: um familia BOMBEDDD (debuted at number 12 on billboard and the ed collab the only thing keeping it float... plus sour, planet her, + future nostalgia getting more daily streams than familia despite being released months/years ago)

- shawn: it'll be okay, his breakup comeback song, so technically his "thank u next/lose you to love me/drivers license" moment, didn't even chart on billboard 100. his followup song, "when you're gone" did get some good reception and did debut at number 3 on usa spotify and number 10 on worldwide spotify, so maybe he not completely over but his previous work used to do a lot better. that song only debuted at number 38 on billboard 100.

As far as their music careers, something strange is happening with the industry these days. Artists are breaking out and becoming super successful, and then having, by industry standards, sub par or lackluster following eras. It's like artists "decline" or whatever is happening at a faster rate. It used to be the "third album curse" or whatever so it would take maybe 5 years for a noticeable decline to be noticed. But things seem to have changed. For example, Camila's first album vs second and third albums. Even Billie's second era had a dramatic reduction in sales/streams. 

Is it the rise of TikTok and people's constantly shrinking attention span? Are people getting addicted to solely trap beats and mumble rappers? Just look @ the top 10 albums or songs on Billboard charts, that should give you some inclination.

I think their relationship has nothing to do with their sales, if anything it should have helped them but it was a non event...i think what is happening is that the industry is changing and lets be honest all these new artists have moderate-cute hits but lack of presence or star image for the general public, its not like anyone here expected these people to be a Lady Gaga, a Britney or a Michael, even Billie who is one of the most successful of these new artists, lack that superstar image, i dont see none of these people in 10 years TBH and that is just MY OPINION.

Seniorita was a good song and deserved to perform well. Otherwise, Shawn and Camila are fine artists but not some groundbreaking musicians like Adele, Gaga, Beyoncé, or Taylor. I just don’t think people care that much.

People changed. Plus,
they’re both too young to get caught up in a relationship.  They have their whole lives and careers ahead of them.  That should be their focus.  They don’t have time for distractions!

To the GP Shawn and Camila basically disappeared since Seniorita in the Music world. No hot photoshooting, confessional interview etc. can fill that void.

Also their music does not sound fresh or exciting. There is no evolution, no reason to root for them in the industry. It felt like they were just there for when they were in the news. Even Shawns Docu was like ??? a boring PR Move that wouldnt sell you, unless you're a fan.

 

I dont think theyll flop forever tho. They just need to rebrand and be more vulnerable and less staged

Have you actually looked at these charts? They’re pretty diverse right now.
