No, Gaga did NOT over-campaign during award season

This is a bullshit narrative that Film Twitter has been pushing, and sadly some Gaga fans have unknowingly been helping to perpetuate it.

The truth is, Gaga didn't do anything that was not expected of the glamorous star of a big studio film. She appeared on a few covers, gave a few interviews, went on a couple of talk shows, and that was pretty much it.

All that happened was that she said a few silly thing that went viral. That's not campaigning - it's called influence.

You know what's over-campaigning? Asking all your Oscar-winning friends to host "industry" screenings, WHILE Oscar voting was ongoing. This actually happened this year, and no one on Film Twitter has called this person out, because they like them.

This pisses me off, because this is the kind of narrative that sticks. Melissa Leo is still paying for a single campaign ad she took out eleven years ago. Hell, even Kate Winslet still gets mocked for her so-called "desperation" just because she was honest about her ambitions. We can't control what people want to say or think but the least we can do is not help them spread the slander.

Agreed. She did what she usually does. And to be VERY specific, anyone can see that many self-proclaimed award season experts and critics simply didn't Gaga to win/be nominated because they strongly disliked the film. I've read hilarious comments like "she doesn't deserve a nomination. The film is terrible." This logic doesn't really make sense. :laughga:

Anyway, I love Gaga's promotional campaigns a lot. They offer drama, enjoyment and a deep love for the craft of action. I'd rather hear Gaga talk about Patrizia's flies and Stanislavski method than talking about typical celebrity brainless bullshit. :mark:

I think because she’s Gaga - the pop star, super famous etc. everything she says & does is paid so much attention, scrutinized/twisted etc. Most working actresses don’t make headlines everywhere they go/through everything they say. Gaga can walk from her car to her front door & it’s news-worthy FFS. She’s visible in ways her acting peers will never be & that’s why to some she ‘over campaigned’ this awards season.

Jessica is clearly getting all the awards because of hosting so many industry screenings. :yennefer: so it clearly paid off for her. Doing a couple of interviews for the promotion of your film is not campaigning.

I didn't mean Jessica. Yes she campaigned hard, but I don't think she used Oscar-winners to get in the same room with actual voters.

I am also not saying she did anything illegal or something. :laughga: She did a lot of screenings, which has worked out for her, and that's fine, she is a well deserving actress. Am just saying it's a common practice in the industry, some measures that you need to take to be recognised. Gaga didn't really do anything at all, but still got dragged is the unfair bit of it all.

Quite wrongly, the campaign for the reward is just as important these days as the actual work you put in for the film.  When people say Gaga over-campaigned, they don’t mean the actual number of events she attended but normally what she’s said at these events.  The board deciding who wins the award are hard to please; they want you to campaign but they also want it to feel natural.  It was repeating lines like “there could be a hundred people in the room” and Gaga saying she got chased by flies that comes across unnatural to the board and causes her to lose the award.

It’s a shame, Gaga’s just a grown up theatre kid who loves some exaggeration and coming out with some craziness.  It’s who she is naturally but unfortunately it rubs the boards the wrong way.

I'm not even talking about the regular screenings and common practices. Someone is currently on the most aggressive and up close & personal campaign that even Harvey would have never dreamed of, and all those who slammed Gaga for campaigning are cheering her on.

I mean... if WE found it cringe and we love her... imagine other people who are not invested in her at all. That's all I gotta say.

None of this really matters though, which is the good news.

i think shes definitely pulled a blinder, her film is the same acclaim as HoG and a non-existent box office and she is winning these awards :rip:

I think you misunderstood the criticism. By over-campaigning, I think people meant being a little too nerdy and extra with the whole method thing. At least that’s how I interpreted it.

No, the word 'campaign' has an actual meaning in the context of the award season.

Hey, if you don’t want people to disagree with you, don’t open a thread on a forum.
