President Zelenskyj speaks to German Parliament

Today marked the first time that the President of the Ukraine, Wolodymyr Zelesnkyj, directly spoke to the German Parliament (watch the timestamped video below, the speech is dubbed in German, tho).

He appealed to the German government and the German people to aid Ukraine and "tear down the wall between freedom and 'not-freedom'" and said that it puzzles him that a country on the other side of the ocean (the US) is closer to them right now than a country in the middle of Europe basically on their doorstep. He critized how the Ukraine was treated for NATO negotiations and EU membership. He also talked about how Germany (and most of Central/Western Europe) is indirectly funding Putin's war by still pumping loads of money to Russia in exchange for resources (he explicitly calls out Nord Stream 2).

 

 

Imo, everything he said was right. The politicians of the European countries didn't listen to him for too long and now they can't do anything about it bc of politics. I hope some of the people in the parliament have the guts to finally do something impactful that helps the Ukraine (I know it's a complicated political situation, but we can do more than this right now).

They don't think that, everybody knows Germany isn't doing enough right now. The country is just de facto dependent on Russian ressources. But the big crash is gonna come one way or another, so I wish the government would just defund Russia now.

„They thought they were being slick“? Sadly germany and especially the old legislation was extremely naive and made itself heavily dependent from Russian Gas and oil, like most of europa btw… But right now, in this moment, they cant just cut all strings when 70% of the energy is imported, mostly from Russia. There are plans to be completely independent by 2027 the latest, but sadly one cant expect to change the entire economy from one day to another.

The previous German governments, led by the conservatives, weren't really "naive". They saw this as a real possibility and simply just didn't care, because that Russian gas, oil & coal money was just too good.

To some degree I would even say that a large part of German conservatism agrees with Russian policies, Russia creating concentration camps for LGBTQ+ people and actively genociding them is something conservatives here have actively refused to condemn or even just address for decades. Because deep down... they kinda wanna do the same sh*t to the population here.

Putin is not really that far removed in ideology from the political right in the Western world, he's just nonchalant enough to act out his impulses because he isn't afraid of societal condemnation.
