The critics disagree. You and your flop taste can go back to listen to Ariana Grande :flower:

Morphine Prince

My track by track review as I listen with a conclusion at the end:

SAOKO - Incredible opener and ironically the last song she made for the album (she said this in an interview). A reggaeton banger with bars. The song pays homage to old school reggaeton and sets the stage for the album. An anthem for change and transformation, Rosialia tells us she will not be kept in a box. She postures herself as an artist who is constantly changing and the song even blends reggaeton and jazz at its peak. With an ending telling us to **** el estilo, Cortala y ya, she ends it with a strong chopped up beat chanting to let go of your preconceived notions and to let artistic freedom reign.

CANDY - A soft reggaeton song about heartbreak and moving on from someone. Rosalia states her lover hasn't forgotten her; she, however, has moved on completely. The vocals fit perfectly with adlibs placed at certain parts of the song. This song is ear candy (pun intended) and I can easily tell this is one of the highlights of the album and one I'll be revisiting often.

LA FAMA - A subtle bachata bop. A tale of how fame can be dangerous and can't be trusted. Classic Rosalia vocals with The Weeknd coming in sounding like Romeo Santos. We've all had time to sit with this song and appreciate it.

BULERIAS - Returning to her Flamenco roots, this song could easily be on El Mal Querer. A song about being an artist no matter what and the work it took to get where she is. "Y aunque a mí me maldigan a mis espalda'
"De cada puñalaíta saco mi rabia
Y aunque no tenga dinero, no tenga a nadie
Yo voy a seguir cantando aunque me ahogase"

One of my favorite lines from the entire album

CHICKEN TERIYAKI - Reggaeton bop. Funny, ironic (as said by her in an interview), and an homage to New York. Flaunting wealth, pop culture references, catchy hook, a perfect Tik Tok song.

HENTAI - Extremely sexually charged lyrics basically about loving her boyfriend's d*ck.... in ballad form. Completely throws off the listener and this is probably what's best about it. The ending is my favorite part with the metralletas at the end.

BIZCOCHITO - Sonically this song is one of the most interesting. The distorted baby voice and conforntational lyrics seem to fit. The song is about independence and in one line she even establishes she's successful because of herself, not because of collabs (a jab at her critics). It's very short but it's definitely one that begs to be on repeat.

G3 N15 - I feel like there's more to these lyrics but what I initially got from these lyrics is her describing LA. Describing the ugly side of fame. Of being away from family and what's important in order to achieve success. Her grandma telling her family is important at the end is a perfect way to end this song. Definitely one of my favorites from the album so far.

MOTOMAMI - Perfect interlude. Very short but a bop. Sounds like Arca but it's Pharrell. Definitely a surprise.

DIABLO - Another experimental reggaeton bop. What I got from it is she's talking about how fame changed her life. The distorted voice definitely enhances the addicting beat. A highlight from the album. James Blake, enough said.

DELIRIO DE GRANDEZA - A cover of a classic. Heartbreak anthem. Soulja Boy in the outro. Unexpected. In a very Saoko style, she mixes a bolero song with rap. Se transforma, que mas se puede decir?

CUUUUuuuuuute - The best bridge on the album in my opinion. Once again, blending many different sounds to create and explosive song.

COMO UN G - A song about how everything comes to an end. One of the best choruses from the album in my opinion. This is a sad song and one of the most emotional ones.

Abcdefg - Funny and omg she said "H de Honduras" - my family's country. I am screaming.

LA COMBI VERSACE - Amazing collab. Just a pure SMASH. Expensive.

SAKURA - A song about how fame isn't eternal. A fitting closer for an album that explores the dark side of fame. Another classic Rosalia sound that could easily have been on El Mal Querer.

Conclusion:

A complete change from her last album, Rosalia has released a body of work where she experiments and combines genres and sounds from different countries and I take this to be a celebration of the Hispanic experience. On first listen this type of album reminded me of Kanye West's Yeezus due to it being more experimental and different than from what fans were expecting. I feel it will be polarizing among the fans but will eventually be appreciated down the line. I feel it's futuristic and twists mainstream music into something unique not many artists are doing. This album was a risk and in my opinion, one that was well worth it. I can't wait to listen to his on heavy rotation for the rest of the year.

Apart from some underwhelming songs, I like the album. I truly appreciate Rosalia's attempt at transforming her sound. She tried not to be pigeonholed into a type of sound represented by her previous album. Regardless of the outcome, her effort is commendable. But yes, some songs needed more vision and execution.

BUT it's Rosalia. I love her. I know I'll eventually end up loving the album. :vegas:

I enjoyed this one - has quite a few interesting moments in terms of production.

Now I am not saying that the entire album sounds like this, but I definitely hear Arca influence here and there - the way the sampled synths from Burial's Archangel in Candy are arranged, the vocal processing in Diablo, Cuuuuute in general has Arca all over it, the keys in La Combi Versace.
I don't get why ppl are saying Motomami sounds like an Arca song - don't hear any Arca there.

I was really curious as to why she was not involved with this album at all considering their friendship and collabs for the last few years but I kind of get it - it's completely fine to draw inspiration from a fellow artist and it does not necessarily mean you have to collaborate on each project. Kind of like the way Frank Ocean refused Kanye's help on Channel Orange - as an artist you don't want to be defined by anyone else's work.
