Putin lives in a phantasy world, where logic says that if one country at your borders may potentially/ hypothetically pose a danger, you have to invade it to save Russia. I am not sure to what extend those are pretexts he uses to save face internationally or actual ideas that he believes due to everybody surrounding him still retaining a Cold War mentality.
