No the collaboration itself wasn't cringey, what was cringey was that live performance. I mean they killed it in the rehearsals.

that live performance was much better than the rehearsals, gaga change the key in the final chorus and they channelled an anger that wasn't meant to be there, it was glorious, all that is lost in the rehearsals, it just tells you how good performers they are and how they manage the difficulties and used them to give yet another dimension to the performance

Agreed!! And I think she has done this not only with metal but also made country music more popular with pop and queer singers. I’d love for her to collaborate with Orville Peck, as an example, who I think is pretty special.Still keeping fingers crossed for an Iron Maiden collaboration though. Seems Gaga keeps collaborating with artists we wouldn’t necessarily associate her at the time (Beyoncé, Florence Welch, R Kelly) so names like Metallica, Iron Maiden etc where she has mentioned a few times are maybe “too expected” for her to collaborate with? I mean she has been so close to Elton for years yet they only did a song together for that animation film which didn’t even make the soundtrack and more recently a kind of “obscure” collaboration on Chromatica. Yet in comparison Dua Lipa and Ed Sheehan have since done much more high-profile collabs with him.

yeah, she has even pose proudly for some pop magazines  wearing iron maiden shirts, she's been a vocal metalhead since the beginning and has been consciously injecting it slowly for her followers, but i only count in the point where she actually collab with a metal band in a big mainstream pop medium.

She did THAT all way before the pop girlies became imitators, the collab was the inflection point :partysick:

well, i'm not familiar with country music as it is a genre that i don't enjoy so i can't really tell, and Joanne is not a country album anyway, it just have some elements and inspirations, but i certainly noticed how other pop artist did went for the stripped down acoustic route after joanne so i see why some people attribute her an influence in that regard

Gaga being influenced by metal and infusing that flavor in different aspects of her work from the jump is definitely a thing but I wouldn't say shes in any way responsible for what you're referring to tbh. That being said, her going in a more metal-centric direction is always a good idea.

why specifically? before their performance there was no metal band/popstar crossover, it is a precedent.

Plenty of pop stars have dabbled within the rock genre that precede her. I also, don't find that her taste in metal is akin to the pop punk/pop rock vibe happening at present. Ya know? Its irrelevant in the grand scheme.

ohhh of course, but i never attributed the pop/punk vibe happening at the precent to her at all, it has nothing to do with metal  or with her playing with metallica, absolutely. and i know that plenty of pop stars have dabbled within the rock scene, BUT never with metal.
BMTH though a metalcore/deathcore band that's is strongly linked to the emo movement, it's still considered a metal band, i know this genre is very controversial within the metal scene of course, i personally don't like it at all, but yeah, it's still metal, one of the worst subgenres of metal i have to say ahaha.
And Miley tho she just sang a rock ballad with metallica, they're still a metal band hahaha.

Gagas affinity for metal and 80s synthpop always bled into all facets of her work and its part of what attracted me to what she was selling. I can't say I find her at all influential in that realm however, or even necessarily in introducing it to others (the metallica performance possibly excluded). But I can definitely see her making waves in the future if she chooses to.

i agree, and of course i would love her exploring more the genre with her music, but you can't deny that their performance at the grammys was already a huge precedent in pop culture for metal.
Of course she's not influential at all within the genre itself, but was talking about the perception of it in pop culture, and what she did was really important and influential on that regards for metal in the pop scene

honestly if that's not a precedent in modern pop culture i don't know what it is, just like her playing "metal militia" in her pop shows.  I don't know why even fans downplays it, and the proof is the outrage it caused in the metalhead community as well as in the pop world.

It was hilarious to me. The metal purists cant wrap their heads around the fact that shes a multi dimensional artist.
