Is Grimes severely underrated?

Hey guys,

so I’ve been listening to a lot of Grimes lately, trying to dissect her entire discography. My God was it an enlightening experience.

You see I’m in my early 20’s and wasn’t able to really appreciate or grasp her earlier work at the time like Geidi Primes, Halfaxa and Visions.

It shocks me how her 2010-2012 records aren’t associated with the outdated techno pop sound of that time. Her albums actually sound ahead of their time imo.

What boggled my mind even more is how she also writes, produces, draws her covers and directs everything she does. Without any major label investment. Let that sink in for a minute. It’s unheard of tbh to me at least. Such talent is extraordinarily impressive.

I remember that her record Art Angels was getting a lot of love on this forum at the time and some would say it was her mainstream era but even then I feel it was overshadowed by other alt pop concept records such as Halsey’s Badlands or Melanie Martinez Cry Baby and I wish I gave Art Angels more of my time and attention back then as I think it’s a phenomenal record. How did Flesh Without Blood and Kill. V Maim not even chart!  I just feel the girl is creating sonic masterpieces that deserve more recognition.

If you’re not that familiar with Grimes, I highly recommend you take a deep dive into her discography, and for those that are, would you agree that she’s severely underrated or? Also feel free to let me know your fav Grimes songs

No, she's not underrated. She has actually enjoyed critical acclaim and public recognition in the indie scene for a long time. It's only as of recently that she's criticized more cause she has been trying to be more mainstream, which - IMO - has led to a dip in the quality of her music. Also, due to her relationship with Elon Musk she's been in the tabloids a bit, but overall she's far from being underrated in my opinion.

Yup. I was going to say even if she wasn't really known much to the GP before Elon, she had a ton of critical acclaim in the electronic/indie music scene. Art Angeles has a very high metacritic score and Oblivion was ranked one of the top songs of the 2000s on a bunch of lists that were put out around 2020 that covered the "best" music in the past 20 years.

I’m discovering her right now too. I always knew about her, but never really listened since I thought it would have been to hard/punk/weird pop for my tastes. Only some songs from Miss A like Violence or We Appreciate Power I liked.

Because of TikTok, I heard and I really looked forward to Shinigami Eyes and damn it might be one of my favorite song of all time. Love Player Of Games too. So now I’m discovering all Miss A and Art Angel, and damn that’s amazing. Butterfly, Realiti, 4AM, You miss me when, are so good for exemple. I’ll see about her previous album since I have a hard time with songs without enough lyrics.

I’m really looking forward her new album, even though some of her fans think it’s not gonna be good because of a too mainstream sound, I think it’s gonna be amazing.

She's been consistently acclaimed since the beginning of her career, so she definitely isn't underrated lol.  Don't really get where you're coming from with this

She's a good musician, but keeping up with her is tiring and gives you second hand embarrassment at times.

She's far from underrated though every lgbt gathering has a grimes gay. she has even been portrayed in snatch game

@Versace @tomsches @MikeyL @NATAH @LilyLark @gagaohlala What songs would you recommend if you were trying to get someone into Grimes? I tried listening to two songs a while back and I wasn’t into it. But I’m willing to give another shot

I’d say start with Art Angels (the album), I find it to be her most palpable album with wider appeal.

If you wanna listen to individual songs then checkout:

Kill V. Maim (nice starter for those who like uptempo pop)

Flesh without Blood

Venus Fly

Genesis

Oblivion

You’ll miss me when I’m not around

We Apperciate Power

4AM

Shinigami Eyes (her latest single, some feel it’s a downgrade for sounding like a basic pop song but could also be a nice introduction for those who enjoy listening to that, no shame imo)

^ I recommended songs that I feel are palpable/can have a wider appeal. I feel once you’re able to appreciate these then you may enjoy her more sonically complex offerings on her earlier albums.

Kill V Maim is what got me really into her! Flesh Without Blood is one of my favourites and Art Angels is probably my favourite album

She never wanted to be mainstream and had indie acclaim which is better for those types of artists. I’ve loved her since her meth days when I saw her perform at indie bars for $5.

Visions album and Darkbloom EP are perfect to me. Really beautiful music.

I feel like I say this on every Grimes thread but I still haven't listened to much at all past Visions :bradley:
