That's crazy. I remember learning about HIV in high school, transmission, contraception and everything, and they never said it was more for gay people. Actually for a long time I didn't understand why people said it was a gay people thing, it just seemed logical to me that it could affect anyone (now I know that the numbers were higher), but I think my school/general education did a good job at telling us to be protected and that HIV could be for everyone. (maybe that was the only upside of being in a more religious school that unfortunately didn't really talk about homosexuality in sex education)

From my understanding of OP LGBT are still proportionally getting infected at higher rates if they are 45% of infections considering LGBT (at least open ones) make up a smaller percentage of the population than that

What has changed is that in total numbers heterosexuals now surpass the percentage of cases so its still hitting LGBT harder

Let's not forget the gay population is at least 10x smaller than the straight population, which makes these numbers represent at least 10x more infections per capita in gays than in straights.

Yup, immediately drew the same conclusion reading this

Tho i dunno that its quite that much smaller (10X)

Actually, official numbers suggest that it's 20x smaller (around 5% of the population being gay), but considering many people won't admit it, I am assuming that number might be closer to 10%. Of course, no official sources, just personal observation and deduction, so can't say either of us is wrong.

A UK study suggested much higher numbers but honestly its hard to quantify

I also suspect the numbers may vary a bit by generation as well as culture and not just cuz of how many are willing to admit it vs those in closet but also cuz i believe culture and environment can play a little bit of a role in how ones sexuality may develop by the time one hits puperty and its more or less set in stone

Im not dismissing biological or genetic factors of course but sexuality and preferences also appear to have a major mental and phychological component so it woulnt shock me if some cultures or even generations could have slightly varying rates of how much of their population is one sexuality or another tbh

Society doesn't talk about HIV anymore as much as they used to, which is alarming to me. A lot of people still believe that you can only get HIV by contributing to some kind of ''gay action''. And on top of that nobody seems to care, that AIDS pandemic is far from over, in fact it's at much worse state compared to its ''media peak'' (while yes, scientist are more aware how the disease acts and spreads).
