The number of new HIV diagnoses in heterosexual people are higher than those in gay and bisexual men for the first time in ten years, according to the UK Health Security Agency (HSA).

In the year leading to December 2021, 45 per cent of all new diagnoses were in gay and bisexual men, while 50 per cent were in heterosexual men or women.

HIV Prevention England estimates that almost 5,000 people were living with undiagnosed HIV in 2020.

The HSA found that heterosexual people were more likely to be diagnosed late, at a stage when damage to their immune systems had already begun.

Levels of HIV testing fell among all groups during the pandemic due to lockdowns and Covid-19 restrictions, but heterosexual people were affected more than gay and bisexual men.

There was a 33 per cent drop in testing among heterosexual people, compared to a 7 per cent decrease in gay and bisexual men.

In 2020, 55 per cent and 51 per cent of heterosexual men and women, respectively, were diagnosed at a late stage compared to 29 per cent among gay and bisexual men.

This is actually scary because heterosexual people don't know how to deal with HIV prevention or treatment or dianosis like the gays do. We get so educated because it's an unfortunate part of growing up gay. But I think it's time to start educating them too or this disease will never get under control

Tell all your straight friends that if they get cold and flu symptoms a few weeks after an unprotected hookup that they need to get checked and its' very serious/not to be taken lightly

I'll be myself until they fūcking close the coffin.

I do not understand how there is people who are not afraid of having unprotected sex, the fact that i will not have peace after doing it is enough to avoid doing it no matter how h0rny i am:wtf: this disease is so scary, but honestly am i surprised? Im sure many of those cases think HIV is only for gays, well a total reverse HIVolian experience.:iamfair:

This is just not a take that makes sense with the data. There shouldn't be a blood ban for gays but this data has no impact on that. 45% of new cases in England are still gays. The rate of HIV infections in the gay population is still extremely higher.

Society doesn't talk about HIV anymore as much as they used to, which is alarming to me. A lot of people still believe that you can only get HIV by contributing to some kind of ''gay action''. And on top of that nobody seems to care, that AIDS pandemic is far from over, in fact it's at much worse state compared to its ''media peak'' (while yes, scientist are more aware how the disease acts and spreads).

That's crazy. I remember learning about HIV in high school, transmission, contraception and everything, and they never said it was more for gay people. Actually for a long time I didn't understand why people said it was a gay people thing, it just seemed logical to me that it could affect anyone (now I know that the numbers were higher), but I think my school/general education did a good job at telling us to be protected and that HIV could be for everyone. (maybe that was the only upside of being in a more religious school that unfortunately didn't really talk about homosexuality in sex education)

:triggered: this is an awful "joke" to make, reinforcing the dangerous stigma that HIV is a "gay disease"

a stigma that helped wipe out a generation of LGBTQ+ people :triggered:

mother, what must i do?

Let's not forget the gay population is at least 10x smaller than the straight population, which makes these numbers represent at least 10x more infections per capita in gays than in straights.

So many Grindr guys are interested in hook up till they see you want safe sex then they're disappointed/ gone. Many don't care about the risk and complain about their sensations instead.

Or they agree to have a condom but not for oral s*x even if many STDs are catched through oral s*x. They'll insist on how better it is without for both etc...
