The selfish ones who didn't care until now will continue to not care, and the pure force of exhaustion will make the ones who do care, less and less adamant about it. This week here in Portugal they disclosed that about 90% of people hospitalized due to covid are not vaccinated. And we have one of the highest vaccination rates in the world. We have vaccinated ourselves. We provide people with essentially free healthcare with a huge tax toll on us. We keep our distance and don't make irresponsible gatherings. We constantly waste money on tests to make sure we're not a point of contagion. We keep ourselves from advancing with our lives to protect a few other lives that could be lost. But it doesn't matter as long as these people screw it up for everyone else. They keep strolling around and living their lives without any care for any of this. They barely do the (immediate and visible) minimum that is required by law. And it will continue to be that way as long as they exist or aren't seriously penalized by these behaviors. Take for example, an acquaintance of my aunt who is studying medicine. Guess what? She didn't vaccinate herself because "she's afraid". Better yet, her elderly parents didn't take the vaccine either because they trust their future medical expert daughter to advise them on what they should do. Oh, but that's not all, because it's never enough for these people. We've had a fairly strict quarantine during the holidays, but did they care? Hell no, they went to one of our tropical islands to spend their holidays in great style. Gathering and partying with strangers at random (surely not supervised) events. It's insane. Honestly, if it were up to me, she would have been expelled from the course the moment she said she didn't believe in vaccines. But this is just an example, there are so many others like it. The friend of a friend of mine works in a pharmacy, yet she doesn't want to get vaccinated. Hell, one of my other aunts works at a healthcare center and she only took the vaccine (reluctantly) after she and her elderly in-laws spent a month in bed due to covid. My boss cut ties with her sister, both of them elderly, because she kept spreading misinformation and antivax propaganda, and refused to stop having dangerous behaviours. We're basically all screwed due to a few bad apples, and to that I say: let. them. die. And with this I'm not saying we should kill them, I'm saying that I don't want my tax money being used to clog hospitals with stupid people that have insisted for 2 damn years to not collaborate with a global emergency, when we have given them all the tools to easily protect, if no one else, at least themselves. If they don't believe in science and medicine, why are they going to a hospital when covid gets to them? Let them fence for themselves with the pseudosciences and imaginary theories that they have used to get to that point. Last time I checked, if you put yourself at risk on purpose, you don't get the right to insurance. TL;DR: People are dumb.
