Why is Broadway shutting down but Vegas residencies are not?

I keep reading that more and more Broadways shows and concerts are being cancelled and shut down because of the rapid rise of Omicron. Yet Vegas keeps promoting all their concerts and residencies like nothing is happening. Katy is opening in 6 days!  Will Vegas eventually start shutting down too? Why is New York going into lockdown while Vegas acts like nothing is wrong?

Isn’t the mayor of Vegas literally anti vax? Maybe that’s why 💀

Unless I've missed a news brief, Broadway isn't shutting down in the way it did last year. They're just cancelling shows as a safety precaution. The reason I believe Broadway is more impacted  is due to the sheer amount of people it takes to run a show each night and the performance schedule. Most Broadway shows perform 6 days a week, with 10 shows in that time span. A majority of Vegas resident shows only perform for a few select dates each month, so if there are any covid issues they can usually quarantine and be fine before the next date. The only exception I can think of is Cirque du Soleil, which usually perform twice a night for 5 days a week. In those cases, they usually have acts-in-rotation that can go on in place of a main act.

For a musical, they can't just insert an entirely new scene to make-up for the missing performers. I know that Wicked, for example, has been calling in former alumni of the show and relying on many standbys and swings to keep the show going. Broadway and Vegas theatres are certainly some of the safest venues in the nation, with their rigorous covid protocols.

You remind me that it's such a wonderful thing to love.

That doesn't mean the promoters of each venue are anti-vax. Unless the NV government passes an insane law like Florida that says you can't ask for vaccine status, many venues require that you are fully vaxxed before you enter, this is in addition to mask requirements.

If that’s true, that would explain it. But how are all the artists fine with it?

Thanks, this makes sense. But I do think some of the vegas residencies are playing quite a few shows in a row too so not sure they’re any more “safe” to perform.

There is absolutely no reason TCB can’t happen in Summer 2022. If they postpone it/ cancel it again, it’s because Gaga just doesn’t wanna do it. Artists have been touring all year, none of which have resulted in super spread events or anything by of the sort, and in 7/8 months, the situation with vaccination worldwide and herd immunity can only improve.

they clearly should have done it in 2021. june 2021 was one of the best periods of covid with very low numbers in most of the US

Oh my god you just reminded me that Vegas/Nevada is going red next year :bradley: I need to move out

Omg I hope that’s not true.  I hate the thought of visiting republican strongholds, especially as a gay.

Concertaholic

I have a ticket to see Katy Perry next month on the 15th and was gonna take my grandmother to Vegas for her 80th birthday at the same time (she could gamble and have fun while I would be there to see Katy) but just canceled the trip cause of Omicron and out of safety for my elderly grandma. Now I’m stuck with the concert ticket and will probably have to sell it at a loss if Katy doesn’t cancel. I prayyy that she does though because at this point Miss Rona is ruining my plans and making me lose money :spin:
