the term ‘MPGs’ is used quite broadly, but I’ve decided to make a comprehensive list with criteria and levels:vegas:

I’ve also divided them into generations. I only went back as far as the 60s, because I’m Young™️ so i don’t know much about the julie andrewses of the world, but feel free to make suggestions about who else could be added:vegas:

my criteria is:

-They have to have at least 2 successful album eras (defined by either a #1 album or multiple top ten hits on Billboard) *

-They have to have at least one Grammy OR Billboard Hot 100 #1 single

-Hold at least one significant world record, regarding charts and/or sales.

*this doesn’t apply to artists who only have one album (Cardi B & Olivia Rodrigo), or artists who were able to achieve top 10 hits across multiple decades (Dolly Parton)

so, here’s the list:

GEN ONE:

Dolly Parton

Barbara Streisand

Cher

Donna Summer

Diana Ross

GEN TWO

Madonna

Janet Jackson

Whitney Houston

Paula Abdul

Mariah Carey

Céline Dion

GEN THREE

Beyoncé

Britney Spears

Christina Aguilera

P!nk

GEN FOUR

Rihanna

Miley Cyrus

Taylor Swift

Adele

Katy Perry

Lady Gaga

Kesha

Nicki Minaj

GEN FIVE

Ariana Grande

Dua Lipa

Billie Eillish

Cardi B

Olivia Rodrigo

SECONDARY MPGs:

(the girls I almost included, but just couldn’t)

Shakira

Doja Cat

Miley Cyrus and Olivia Rodrigo included as Main Pop Girls, but not Fergie, Nelly Furtado and Gwen Stefani (the blue-print figures for the R&B/pop sound in the mid- and late-2000s) feels wrong. We as Gaga fans are the generation that grew up to I'm Like a Bird, Say It Right, Cool, Big Girls Don't Cry consistently playing on the radio.  Not to mention Shakira how hugely iconic and succesful worldwide was Shakira.

Also if Billie Eilish and Cardi B made the cut, I don't see why Doja couldn't. Say So was on par with Billie's biggest hits and she has so released so many widely known songs in a short time, and they are both on their second album. Plus, her music is way more pop-oriented than Cardi's.

Idk why i refused to believe theres no other MPG after GEN 4:ladyhaha:maybe because the success is there but the cultural impact worldwide doesnt.

Quizás bastaba respirar, sólo respirar, muy lento...💙

Cyndi Lauper needs to be added to 80s pop girls, her songs Girls Just Want to Gave Fun, True Colors, Time After Time continue to be relevant to this day.

Nelly Furtado has at least 2 huge eras and Loose especially is still getting listened to today.

Avril Lavigne’s legacy is still referred to today too.

Basically every pop girl who didn’t flop should be on here. :partysick:

So yes as someone said above Cyndi should be in gen 2, I would put Kelly Clarkson in gen 3, as well as Fergie Gwen and Nelly… those 3 WERE pop music at their peaks. :partysick: Shakira is also definitely missing. Tinta Turnter. SHANIA TWAIN.

Nice try I guess. Better luck next time. :partysick:
